enforcement officers from all over california gathered at the chp academy to honor the life of officer andrew cam larry -- camalari, he died after a suspected drunk driver slammed into his police car on an east bay freeway late christmas eve. candice nguyen reports chp officials say he was what a chp officer should be. >> reporter: on a clear sunny day, a tribute to a fallen bay area chp officer. he was on duty stopped in hayward on christmas eve when a suspected impaired driver crashed into his patrol car killing him and injuring another officer. >> this is a tragic event, not only for the family but also for the state of california. >> reporter: chp acting commissioner warren stanley led wednesday's ceremony, one that acknowledges a killed officer's end of watch. >> it is my solemn honor to call the name of the california highway patrol's most recent hero, andrew j.camalari senior, i.d. number 21653, hayward area, end of watch december 24th, 2017. >> reporter: in the front row sat his family including his widow and children. >> it's a day that we shouldn't be here because this did not have to happen.
