we've got on the phone with us right now new york governor andrew cuomo.e had a chance, governor, to get around your state, your state already experiencing at least a million people without power. what have you assessed? >> well, as you said, the storm -- the worst of the storm has passed, but we're feeling its damage all across the state. flooding, power outages, about a million people, number of people -- we've lost a number of people to fatalities from flooding. so the worst has passed. it's not as bad as some predicted, but the damage is extensive. ? and now what about rescues? there have been quite a few rescues that have taken place in some parts of your state. give me an idea of all that's transpired there, what kind of assistance you've been able to get from both the state as well as the federal level on those searches. >> well, one of the advantages we did have is we had advance notice, we had a few days to prepare, and the level of intergovernmental coordination has really been exemplary. the federal government was very helpful. they helped to ex

we heard from mayor bloomberg and now from the governor of new york this is andrew cuomo announcing he has delayed 1,000 national guard troops to help in the efforts with hurricane irene. this is a storm that is still seven on eight hours away. they shut down the trains and subways for the first time ever in new york history because of a natural occurring storm. >> the mayor is telling us they won't be back up and running until midday monday. that is extraordinary and they closed five airports in the area. no more flights coming in. they are taking it seriously we hope in the end that all this saves lives. there is no way for us to tell what you see on that radar be will be the storm that hits new york later tonight and goes up to boston and the coast up there. we're waiting and watching and we'll find out together. this is a telethon. fox news confirming five deaths reported as a result of irene. i think there were two in virginia and three in north carolina. we'll get more details. >> and all the things you worry about. trees falling, someone hydroplaning on the road. another man had

want to tell you that the locals here were surprised when governor andrew cuomo stopped by here to survey damage on long island. this is one of the places he came. he went up on the boardwalk here. he took a look around, he looked at a life guard station that had been upended. he shook a lot of hands. then we were able to talk to him one-on-one and ask him some questions about how he thinks new york fared. now, he said that he does not think that new york overprepared for this monster storm. and he said that he does think that new yorkers and others here in the state will pay very strict attention for the next storm that comes around, that they will listen to officials and not think they are simply crying wolf. here's what the governor told me. >> don't underestimate the damage that has been done here. this will go on for days, literally. so i think it was prudent what we did, it would have been worse if we hadn't. >> reporter: now, back to you live here. the governor said throughout the state about a million people have had called the flooding in some parts of the state horrendous, not h

andrew cuomo talked to me about the catskill area because of the flooding.et's go to long beach where susan candiotti is standing by. tell me what you're seeing. >> reporter: two predictions came true. there is flooding. and there are power outages. that much is true. if you happen to be in one of those areas, you're not feeling too good about things right now. if not, officials are saying from their early estimates, no injuries, no damages. there is flooding in some minor areas that they always get flooding. a lot of the water has already receded. no serious reports of heavy damage. however, 450,000 customers on long island are without power. we're reporting to you from long beach. this is where we were staying. you can see they flooded in the first floor of this hotel. if you look down the street, you can see that they're pumping water out. you can see that water gushing out of that hose right down there to the left of the police vehicle. then as we drove around town, we saw some issues, minor flooding. but honestly, it wasn't bad at all. walking over here

governors that get talked about in terms of being viable national candidates, chris christie, andrew cuomo, bob mcdonald, they seem to have passed with flying colors in terms of preparing their public. as you have noticed, as the flooding continues to happen, it has yet to be seen what kind of report card these states will get. number two, we are seeing the potential political fallout here in d.c. about the federal aid for this stuff. eric cantor saying that while he certainly and his caucus expects to provide federal aid, they may want to see some cuts when it comes to -- some cuts made to sort of make up for what could be $7 billion to $10 billion. on top of that, two senators from missouri, mccaskill and blunts, are worried that the aid that they would like to see for the tornadoes and floods in joplin will be on hold as they take care of irene. they do not want to see that happen. they're a little upset about the east coast perhaps getting all this and do not want to be forgotten about. >> all right, patrick. thank you very much. >> thank you. >> take care. >> we'll see you later. >>>
