that's andrew jackson's handwriting. this letter is at the university of pennsylvania, that's where we photocopied it. and there are also several other versions of this letter here because this letter provoked a little controversy, and it got into the daily newspapers. what we do is, first, we produce a transcription of the letter like this, and we send it to, we transcribe it, we put on some footnotes. if any explanation is necessary, which it often is, and then we send it to university of tennessee press, and they publish it in one of our volumes. we're finding a lot of information about everything. jackson's papers are kind of a window into everything that's going on in the united states during his presidency. he gets letters from everybody. he gets petitions from indian leaders, he gets letters from several of these from mothers whose husbands are dead and whose only son was drunk when he enlisted in the army, and she needs him home, and could the president, please, release him. we get e petitions for pardons from cr

they had this strict code of who we should be as americans, and then i had andrew jackson fanning the flames. this first contact, down to george bush in 2008. all of the characters that appear are real characters that are taken from my research. we are an interesting mix and i want to provoke wonder about who we are. every one of the characters are taken from actual photographs or documents that i found in my research on american history. in a lot of my banners, you conceal -- uc the melting pot, the imagery and myth that we use in our culture. talking about these reductions of all these different mixes of people, how you distill the experience. that is something i want to think about, collecting the ideas and ingredients, and i wanted to do the san francisco de lexie. -- elixir. we found a spring water underneath a church in cow hollow. we put rosebuds in the water to attract peace, and it made a meade. it was sitting in the gallery. we distill that through local herbs. it was really surprising how delicious it was, because we were mixing a lot of seemingly in congruent ingredients,

when andrew jackson got rid of the debt it was the one time anybody has. the way the wheels are turning in the opposite direction as we think they are money isn't actually the scarce resource like petroleum or something where there's only so much. but how much we create and who gets it. that is the real political struggle. on a global scale is similar for most of cold war history. the countries actually were holding the treasury bond. the u.s. has this advantage it can raise checks and treat them like gold and use reserve currency by the rest of the world. there used to be west germany was one of the bigger holders and gold states and japan and south korea. they are all under u.s. military protection in one way or other. in a way the amount of debt is the same or increases with military spending so people are lending as the money to create these armies that never quite pay it back. now that china is involved is more complicated but that is the symptom being challenged and it is simply true that the last few hundred years the global reserve currency tended
