so, andrew jackson fits into a pattern of democratic, small d anti- business community reform that started with the jeffersonians, but then moves primarily to the cities as exemplified by jackson, leader by franklin roosevelt and kennedy and johnson. does that sound like a fair summary of? and last week we saw a whole bunch of people responding to this. and one more thing. what do the indians have to do with this? basically nothing. you can tell that story completely really without mentioning indians at all. and mentioning what is going on on the frontier or on the west only tangentially. so, last week we saw hammond responding by saying this class struggle is not class struggle. it is a struggle between old capitalists and new capitalists, between old money and new money. people who are already rich, and people who wanted to be rich and who had to shove aside the old rich. we saw lee benson suggesting democracy is indeed the spirit of an age. that the democratic party has no particular claim to it. and in fact they do not come to it first. and that there is a disconnection between politic

is the prayer of your friend, andrew jackson." 1900 storm for galveston is a major event in the island's history. there's been a lot written about it and said about it, but it lingers today. so, it is still very much a part of galvestonians history and lives today. this letter is a recent acquisition, and it's from francis lister, who was a railroad agent. it is written to his two sons. "dear boys." it is a letter basically describing what happened to him and his family during the storm. it goes into great detail about the water rising and the wind picking up and what happened to them through the night of september 8. it's basically letting the boys knoew tw they are ok. he had already sent them telegraph's, but i guess he wanted to go into detail and let them know what happened. it is very poignant. the detail is very descriptive and really gives you a good idea of the horrors these people suffered. just to give you an idea of how horrible the night was we can read about the water rising and houses being moved off their foundatio

did you explore andrew jackson's farewell address in your book? >> i did not. i had a lengthy section in andrew jackson who comes in general for fairly harsh treatment, deservedly so in my estimation. this is the second book i've written and i find i have opinions about certain historical characters when i go into a book and then when i come out it's interesting to see how they've changed in my opinion of jackson has plummeted to about as low as any opinion can plummet, notwithstanding his views on currency. the currency is an issue that i elected not, very strategic and look at picking issues which fetches a currency doesn't fit into the hypothesis but it was just that i limited space and wanted to be strategic in my selection so that the chapters could be grounded on what i view special in the latter half of the book, the five substantive chapters on farm subsidy, on porkbarrel, medicare, financial regulations and corporate taxes. i tried to find consensus views of the facts, and i felt like regulation of the currency is something where there's such deep divi

you don't always the andrew jackson on a $20 bill. he will appear on other denominations. you will also see different portraits for some famous individuals. the portraits you see on today's notes are fairly constant in design. that was not the case during this time. we will plunge into some of these notes. there were a lot of presidents on banknotes. the president you see on our current currency also appeared on notes during this time. here is john quincy adams on this $500 legal tender note. incidentally, $500 with the equivalent of about $8,500 in today's money. the general public really didn't see this note. the average salary for a worker during the civil war in 1869 was about $25 a month. most people never really got to see john quincy adams on a note. grover cleveland was on our thousand dollar bill but he was on $20 bills during this time. james garfield appears on a note. this is a gold certificate that has his portrait and there is a mirror image of his portrait on a special kind of national bank note. it is called a brownback note issued in the 1880's. if you kno
