as was andrew johnson. and came to the states around 1807. he married a woman named sarah childress from murray county and murray county was his home as well as others of the polk family. polk was a protege of andrew jackson's and very loyal to jackson and the democratic party, which served him in good stead with old hickory. in fact, he was called young hickory by some. and as i said, a prominent murray county family. polk served as speaker of the u.s. house of representatives for 10 years. this is an image of him as speaker, and then ran for president in 1844 and served just one term as president from '44 to '48 and you can see just at a glance, that in a way it aged him. this is an early photograph. photography was invented during polk's administration and this is an image of him at the end of his administration. there are some documents here having to do with polk's inauguration. this was a tremendous event, of course, for nashville, and there are invitations for people to come and join the democratic inauguration, which was held in washi

that's why andrew johnson and his earlier life had actually moved to tennessee. nd that's why large numbers of poorer white southerners had actually moved to the upper midwest in surt of the war. so, yes, that i do believe that there was a phenomenon in existence. and the second part of your question is that the observers did notice those regions that were small farms. so, of course the gentleman from illinois went to northwestern north carolina and he said yeah this is pretty much how it should be. but what they wanted to do was break the political power of the landholders and redistribute that to not only former slaves but to white unionists as well. as to whether that would have -- there would have been enough land, i don't think one could nswer that question. that -- [inaudible] >> that's actually my next book project about and there was a very fassnailting convention in philadelphia -- fascinating convention in philadelphia in september of 1866 of southern unionists -- why southern unionists. and every single state sends representatives except for south caro

looking over the wreckage of 1868 when they impeached andrew johnson, they realize that was the first time they handed out tickets to the galleries because everyone wanted to be there you cannot really impeach a president and not allow the american public to watch it, so they agree to bring television cameras and for the president's impeachment trial at that summer he resigned. the cameras were still there in december of 1974 when nelson rockefeller was sworn in so that was the first event in the senate chamber. they immediately took the cameras out so there was no more television. and then in the late 1970's, the panama canal treaty was being debated and it was a very big issue at the time, huge amount of interest. the senate allowed national public radio to come in and broadcast. i remember sitting in the staff gallery, right at the front was linda rick meyer who was doing the play-by-play and introducing who was speaking at the time. they had senators who were speaking but nobody knew who the voices were some she would do a little introduction and then setting next to her was the w
