as andrew mccabe said, this is extraordinary now to have this kind of investigation. it is very suspicious. we do need to get to the bottom of it. one additional thing that's at stake here is the question of whether not only the trump justice department is independent or organized, but whether the biden attorney general will be independent. in the last several weeks, had several times garland is working independently of the white house as attorney general, and that he will do some things that the progressive democrats don't like. they already complained about it to the president, putting pressure on the president to do some things. but in other cases, he is doing things, for example, cracking down on russians, if they've enacted restricted voting laws, whether the laws are unconstitutional. he is going to investigate that. that's something -- >> early days former merrick garland. need more information from his department of justice. susan page on the significance of this. look, top officials at doj under the trump administration claiming we didn't know about this. giv

andrew mccabe, the former director of the fbi.e is the author of "the threat: how the office protects america in the age of terror and trump." thank you, andy mt. good to see you. we now have this report on the insurrection, but it ignores trump's responsibility. is that a mistake? >> of course it is. we have a detailed and broad scope report, but what we don't have is a complete report. the report, as you mentioned, ignores the impact the former president had on the rally that ultimately led to the riot. the report refrains from even referring to to an insurrection, that was a bad word they couldn't use, and it doesn't even go so far as to call out the big lie. with those kind of fundamental inadequacies, it's hard to see how we get much out of this. one of the my concerns about this report is it provides a bit of a fig leaf. it kind of creates an excuse for republicans and others on the hill to say that we don't really need to go any further, which further undercuts our ability to get a legitimate commission that's going to look

. >> let's break all this down with the andrew mccabe.r of the book "the threat, how the fbi protects america in the age of terror and trump." thanks for joining us. how big of a deal do you think this potentially could be? >> it's a very big deal. it's a great win for the folks at the justice department, the fbi. it's a good thing any time we can take the profit out of these scams, but it's also important that we put this in perspective. according to the fbi deputy director, he announced at the press conference that they've been working over 90 incidences of the dark side ransomware. what we know is one of those maybe 90-plus attacks we've managed to recover some of the money from. >> they recovered a little more than half of the $4.4 million. but they didn't get it all. is that a problem? >> it would be better if they had. the idea so remove the incentive from these attacks by making them no longer profitable. we have a long way to go before we get there. the bureau stated today they have seen 100 different types of ransomware variants

let's bring this andrew mccabe. good to see you, andy, welcome.y question is, the report was first requested in december before the january 6th. does that make january 6th an intel failure? because they had reason to look and then they disregarded the social media messaging and the days leading up to january 6th? is it an intel failure because they didn't take it seriously enough soon enough in the days before that maybe it would have helped them stop it? >> it could very well could be. they didn't actually produce a product in december when it was asked of them. it would be interesting to know what that product would have been. what the conclusions about qanon and more broadly, trump supporters and their propensity to trump supporter would have been. i suspect the fbi thinks very differently about those groups today than they can in december. in any case, this report delivered now after it was requested, indicates the fbi realizes they are watching a train about to crash, right? these koounl supporters, they believe very deeply in this, whatever

investigators are also open cases that focused on then fbi director comey and his deputy at the time, andrew mccabe, and that reportedly, the same staff that was tasked with these investigations kept arguing there was no case. and that it looked bad. but they were told by sessions and then bill barr to keep going, saying it was about politics not protecting national security. good to have you both. andrew, obviously, you're aware of some of this because you were caught up in it. understanding more of the scope and who they were going after and what the pushback was from the same staff, what does it tell you? >> well, honestly, chris, obviously, i know that the president and his henchmen have had it out for me for many years. that's not a surprise. but the revelations that we've been privy to over the last few weeks about the subpoenas of journalists' records and now the absolutely -- i don't want to say unprecedented, the ground-breaking step of subpoenaing data, private data of a sitting member of congress. i had never -- i had no idea that that kind of stuff was going on and it is just -- 21 year

i want to bring in former deputy fbi director andrew mccabe.o be very clear about this, because sometimes it's -- well, it may sound that way to you, but it didn't sound that way to ukrainian officials. it wasn't so damning. yes, it was, and we know that, andy, because on this show, we had igor nabokov on who was an assistant to then president zelensky, or then was an assistant to president zelensky, and here is his reckoning of what rudy was doing. >> there was an attempt at a quid pro quo. so basically, he was asking for investigations and public statements and many other things, and in return towards the end of the conversation he mentions that that would make it possible for him to go and speak with president trump to solve a problem that he admits to kind of putting in president trump's head. he reminded me we are a country actively fighting with russia for many years. so anything to do with swapping, you know, favors within our bilateral relationship in exchange for getting involved in u.s. domestic politics is just wrong on many levels.

let's bring in evan perez, alex marquardt and former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe to talk about is. andrew, to you first. this is a win for the doj. it's a win for colonial pipeline. is it a significant win in the overall fight that this country is facing against ransomware and hackers? >> well, it is a win. it's a great result and it makes me enormously proud of my former colleagues at the fbi and doj, but -- and while i will say that if we are able to take the profit out of ransomware, you will see an enormous reduction in ransomware, but, as you've kind of alluded to, victor, this is one case. and we have ransomware attacks on the -- we have numbers in the several thousands every year in which the average ransom that's recovered -- that's taken by the attackers, you know, those numbers are going up $350,000 per attack was the last number i saw. so, this is still an incredibly lucrative criminal business and it will continue, you know, undermining the effectiveness of all of our businesses and industries and governments here in the united states until we get our hands around it

let's see where this stands with andrew mccabe.ou is a congressional house investigation? >> well, chris, it's not what we wanted. it's not ideal. but it the something. and knowing that the house democrats will retain the unilateral authority to issue sout subpoenas is a good sign. without subpoena authority, this goes nowhere. in addition to that, what they absolutely need are some credible insiders, people who understand the federal agencies that are at play here, specifically dhs and the fbi, and people who have the access to classified and the knowledge of the interworkings and the documents and the employees of the agencies to go in and ask the right, hard questions. and to bring those folks in and hear what they knew and what they did with what they knew prior to january 6th. a lot of work that needs to be dope. and hopefully, this select committee will get it done. >> my question is, if you don't nail this at the planning level, that there were bigger brains in doing this, it wasn't spontaneous, don't you run the risk of any

leak probes involving congress, former deputy director and cnn senior law enforcement analyst andrew mccabeeing here. the idea this investigation was not first and foremost about adam schiff and eric swalwell themselves, does it make it any less egregious in your mind that their personal communications data were secretly seized by the government? what questions still need to get answered? >> well, anderson, there are a lot of good questions. i think the -- what we're learning now that the investigation apparently began targeting a staffer or member of the committee and not the members themselves seems reasonable. but the reasonableness kind of ends there. typically what would happen is you would begin with the target and you would then identify all of that person's contacts -- their e-mail contacts, their telephone contacts, and then you'd have to figure out who those contacts were. one way to do that is to drop a subpoena like we've heard about that got served on apple in this case to uncover the subscriber records of all those contacts. in this case knowing that you were grabbing the subs

joining me now is phil mattingly and former fbi director andrew mccabe, thank you both for being here tonight. it is nice to see both of you but not for this, of course. let me start with you, phil, fbi is director wray is comparing the threat of the attack to 9/11. how is the biden administration responding to this? whether it is trying to harden defenses as it relates to private companies that are in large part in control of these infrastructure pieces but also trying to figure out what the u.s. can do. the biden administration ordered a rapid strategic review where the president is expecting a series of options in terms of what they can do to push back on these attacks. they are expected to be retaliatory measures he's presented with and disable some of these networks and counter but also working with allies and lining up alliances to push back as well. you will see a large meeting with russian president vladimir putin and while the u.s. is not blaming the russian government for these ransomware attacks that occurred. they know these criminal syndicates are located in the country,

let's discuss this with abby phillips, also here, andrew mccabe, former deputy director of the fbi. we're seeing this surge of violence across the country? >> i know from my own experience what the fbi does in these situations, and it sounds like what the deputy attorney general has already planned, to surge resources in the form of agents and also analysts into those cities that are experiencing these really troubling rises in murder rates and shootings. the idea of these resources is to target specifically gun crimes. gun crimes in some places are policed and prosecuted at different rates. so the idea is to increase the policing and specifically the prosecution and ultimately the sentencing of people for gun crimes in an effort to both put gun criminals in jail and keep them there, and also to send the message to the community, if you're caught committing a crime and you have a gun on you, you will experience much more severe consequences. >> abby, let's talk about the political consequences. caitlin mentioned the 1994 crime bill, that's in the deep background, and present day, th
