we saw, for example, in walmart in the most recent walmart shooting. >> and i want to bring in andrew mccabenow. andrew, john miller is saying that firearms, guns, two handguns, apprehended at the scene with the encounter, with this individual who matched the description of the person in the photos. two handguns and some magazines, some ammunition. what do you do with them now? how do you trace those guns? what can you find out from those? >> there is no question, john, that the atf becomes a key partner in the tracing of those firearms. so, you want to understand where those firearms were? how they were acquired? where they have been purchased? who was the purchaser -- >> they're talking right now. let's listen to what they're saying. >> chief of police here in michigan state university. tragic series of events have occurred here this evening. we've had a tremendous amount of support from our community, to include hour-long forsman partners who are here with me at the moment as well. standing at the far-right, we have county prosecutor john doing. with him, we have sheriff scott. special ag

in washington, cnn law enforcement andrew mccabe.d national security analyst shawn turner, and cnn's juliette kayyem. thank you all for being with us. let's start with, you shimon. bring us up to speed. what did we know about how this all played out? >> john, about five hours or so, around, as you said, 20 after eight, there was a first call of shots fired and what we've learned from police is that they went from that one location at one of the areas, berkey, that building that the gunmen then went to a second building a union hall where he shot and killed one victim, two others were killed at berkey. so, that is three dead. and then, five are in the hospital. some are with life-threatening injuries. and then, after the incident, police, a short time after that released a photo of who they believed was a con man. and then, sometime after that is when they encountered him, the police officers encountered him and the gunman shot himself according to police so now the whole thing is underway to try and identify him, to try and figure ou

former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe spoke earlier to cnn about the next steps in the investigationnto the suspected gunman. >> the fbi and their colleagues will go through all of the history they can pull together on this individual so the likely execute search warrants at his residence and on his vehicle and anyplace else they can associate with him. don't identify all those electronic devices they can associate with him, computers, laptops, cell phones, all that sort of stuff. they will look at his social media, they will look at his internet service providers, email providers, things of that nature, to try to understand what is motivation might have been in embarking upon this incredibly dreadful act that he engaged in this evening. there is a lot of work for investigators to do here. basically building a timeline of events and statements and writings and postings on social media. and i think they can associate within that might shed light on is intense and, i suspect that investigation will go on for quite some time. >> that was andrew mccabe, former deputy director of the fbi.

we're joined by cnn senior law enforcement analyst and former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe. andrew, obviously a lot we don't know about this latest shooter's motivation. we do know he pleaded guilty to a firearm charge back in 2019. law enforcement source tells cnn he purchased two weapons in the state of michigan in 2021. does it strike you as odd that he was able to make that purchase? >> yeah, anderson, it's really at this point, we don't have quite enough facts to sort through this thing perfectly. but what i can tell you is on the federal level, is firearms conviction for a misdemeanor would not have prohibited him from purchasing a firearm. the disqualifier in the brady act is having him convicted of a felony. and he was initially arrested for a felony, but later pled that down to a misdemeanor. so that would not have stopped him. the question is whether or not he violated any michigan state lost. there is a requirement for anyone purchasing a pistol in michigan to have a pistol purchase, or purchase license, that's issued by your local sheriff or some other official. a

. >> joining us now andrew mccabe, the former deputy director of the fbi. andrew, after the three biden fbi searches, how much does one investigation influence the other? was the pence search inevitable? >> absolutely, victor. the pence search was inevitable. we have to remember that for the government and for the fbi, the first principle issue in any one of these questions of the misplacement of classified material is to recover that material. they want to get out to that place and make sure they have everything that could potentially be there. the searches were certainly the right way to go. sounds like the pence team has cooperated from the very beginning, which is also good to see, and this is a necessary step. >> andrew, is it a necessary step because of fbi policy or politics? >> it's a necessary step because of the requirements of the investigation. i'm not sure there's a -- i'm pretty familiar with fbi policy. i'm not sure there's one about whether to or not search former presidential or vice presidential homes. i don't think that exists. in these ca

some prospection now from cnn law enforcement analyst and former fbi deputy director, andrew mccabe. andrew, obviously very different than the nichols case, but what do you make of what that body cam video shows? >> well, i mean, it's absolutely excruciating to watch. i can't imagine what it's like to watch that as a family member or a friend of mr. bagley. it's hard to watch as a member of law enforcement. as well. you know, there is a couple of things that jumped out at you right away. obviously, and he fleeing suspect does not immediately qualify as someone who presents a mortal threat to you, as an officer, or to any other folk individuals who might be in the area. so, it highlights the incredible, how incredibly hard it is to make these life and death decisions very quickly. and maybe highlights why it is so important to effectively train officers to de-escalate in situations, maybe make decisions not to pursue fleeing suspects when they are not known to be armed or seeking a position of cover to return fire, or something like that, because it leads you down a path into a situati
