i want to get to deputy director of the fbi and cnn's senior law enforcement analyst, andrew mccabe. andrew, when you read this and you see that this information apparently spread far and wide from journalists to former foreign politicians, if trump actually was telling an australian billionaire this information, how damaging is that? >> oh, my gosh, kaitlan. it's so unbelievably sensitive. nuclear information about some of our most sensitive national defense assets. and before i talk about that, i should just say, in response to the trump team's public statement, there is no proper context -- there is no context -- that makes disclosing national defense information to a foreign national acceptable or lawful really under any circumstances whatsoever. so, that's where we are. this information is so sensitive that it is one of the very, very few categories of information that even a sitting president cannot unilaterally declassify. so, congress has carved out special laws to cover nuclear defense information. this clearly would fall within that purview. so, it's not something that trump

joining me now, cnn senior law enforcement analyst andrew mccabe, who's the former deputy director of the fbi. andrew, thanks for being here. we have been talking all night about these demonstrations and the concern that they are closing, not just to the region but here in the united states. what are u.s. intelligence agencies monitoring right now? >> abby, here in the homeland, our intelligence, domestic allegiance agencies, the fbi and dhs are theory closely monitoring streams of intelligence to try to stay ahead of threats that might develop here. and that could be folks who are affiliated with or inspired by hamas or other terrorist organizations, who desire to strike out here in the united states two, you know, in unity with what they see happening overseas. it could be people striking back against muslims in some sort of effort to make a stand against what's happened to the israelis. and so there is a very toxic kind of mixture of emotions and motivations that is behind that. and so the bureau is watching that very closely. at the same time, they're trying to ensure they have st

joining me now is current fbi deputy director andrew mccabe. andrew, we were covering this all last week, you assessment of this. but what's clear is there is multiple warning signs, but despite, that 18 people have still been killed. who failed here, do you think? >> well, caitlin, it's really complicated. and there were many warning signs that some people in the story try to do the right thing. i think the bottom line is is when we look at the details, you can understand that our system of gun safety laws is entirely insufficient to prevent a tragedy along these lines. let's talk just for a minute about the fact that he was committed, or he attended, or went to a mental institution last july for two weeks. in federal law, you can be prohibited from purchasing a firearm if you've been adjudicated a mental defect of. so that means you are involuntarily committed by a court. in this case, if he voluntarily went to an institution for two weeks of treatment, that would not preclude him from ever buying guns. and any guns that you had purchased befo

's military reserves. a certified firearms and tactics instructor. does that explain something to you about the number of victims we are hearing about? >> i want to talk about the number of most instances of law enforcement would probably have said at least a certain number. especially since we are reporting certain numbers. all the agencies are. totally quiet on that issue. i do not want to make much of it. it's unique it might suggest that of the many injured we have that the number is going to get higher. because of the many injured we have. the suspect or person of interest, not called a suspect yet. training suggests that with the right to come, this kind of damage, this kind of killing can be done. it also suggests that he knows how to plan mass killings.

now i want to bring in cnn's senior law enforcement analyst andrew mccabe. andrew, let me play for you and for our audience actually just what bryian is talking about, te audio what is happening out sued of that home today . is. >> i need you to come out. >> now, andy, i want to break this down a little bit. let's start with what we heard there. some of this i imagine, is boiler plate. but what caught my ear was hearing brian say, they were kind of -- it kind of got more personal. this might be intimidating. please, you know, come out. >> sure. >> how do you interpret that as a law enforcement officer? >> there's been a shift of entry tactics in law enforcement in the last few years. back when i was on the s.w.a.t. team in new york, things were much more -- we were much more inclined to use dynamic entry. flash bangs, you rush in quickly. try to overwhelm the occupants of the space and take everybody into custody quickly. now they try to mitigate as much risk as possible. what you'll see, what we saw here tonight, what you often see outside of residences wher

we're seeing with our own eyes, i want to bring in cnn analyst and former deputy fbi director andrew mccabe. i want to just start by taking in what christopher wray said. the jewish population is a little more than 2%, almost nothing in the united states. more than 60% of the threats. we can look at data or we can talk to our friends and family about how it feels. it's never felt this way in the united states -- i'll start with jews, for jews the level of concern and fear is palpable. >> it's understandable, right. threats to the jewish community have been an inescapable aspect of life in america for as long as we can remember. when you look at the statistics, some of which the director discussed today, that has been elevating over the last few years. so between 2021 and 2022 the adl says anti-semitic acts went up 29%. the director quoted 60% of religious-based threats are directed at the jewish community. that's a number he clarified later that was before the current unrest in gaza. we are at a watershed moment for this community and for federal law enforcement and intelligence's ability t

joining me now is former deputy assistant general tom dupre and former deputy director of the fbi andrew mccabe. thank you for being here. and andy, what is your take here, because if this is the two options, this is serious or this is short of that and just another round of donald trump not respecting protocol. where do you think this lands? >> well, both of those can be true. first, it is absolutely serious, and this is arguably, the most sensitive information that our government holds, and as evidence of that, i would point out that the vast majority of the classified information is classified by executive order, and that is the president cites what is classify and then cites what is not classified, but not with the nuclear defense information, and that is classified by statue and even the president cannot disclose it, but it is another example of donald trump treating our nation's most important secrets with disregard and irresponsibly and in a way that is criminal, though he not charged with this episode yet. >> tom, what is your take on this, and why do you think that it is not part of th

andrew mccabe is back with me now. andy, when you look at what has happened right now. and this is in me. so one of the first questions that people will ask is whether a person was known to authorities. we learned from john miller that this person was a military reservist. but the gun laws, and the type of weapon being used here. that's the second question. what are the gun laws in maine. what's the weapon you are seeing in any of these still photos able to be lawfully used in that state? obviously not for criminal purpose. >> that is right. it's entirely likely the weapon you see in this photo can be lawfully owned in the state of maine. a weapon is likely an ar-15 or similar variant. high powered assault style weapon. maine does not have a traditional background check requirement beyond the federal requirements that are imposed upon federally licensed firearms. maine also does not have a what we refer to as a red flag law. where some states call it an extreme risk law. the laws enable family members or law enforcement to take firearms away from people who seem to be a

i want to bring in more of our experience right now in andrew mccabe. what stood out from you with these maine officials? >> you know, i think what you're seeing is what we have freblgtly see in the immediate aftermath of a horrible, violent gun-fueled disaster in this country. you see senators who are all of a sudden very aware of the positions they have taken in the past that have not helped this situation. it is remarkable that the congressman has pledged to change his position, but quite frankly, the prospects are bleak for any sort of meaningful change with respect to thing that most -- almost all americans support, university background checks, reasonable age limits for, you know, people purchasing things like high-capacity rounds, military-style weapons, things of that nature. returning to some degree of an assault weapon ban. you know, we have a congress that can barely elect its own speaker after many weeks. so we have seen many, many horrendous gun-tiled tragedy. none of them have been enough to compel our lawmakers to make meaningful change,

. >>> joining us now, cnn law enforcement analyst andrew mccabe. thank you for being with us.start with, you heard the level of preparation one guard for every hostage. let's take a listen to it. >> we were five and for each of us there was a guard. they took care of every details. >> and again, i keep saying so many elements of this were striking. but the preparation, the lead-up to the attack i think was stunning to everybody. the preparation clearly to take the hostages and be prepared for them was also done. what does that tell you? >> it tells you, it's incredibly well organized, well planned. they took their time putting this entire thing together. the hostage piece is a big part of that strategy. we have to remember, phil, that the hostages are an asset for hamas now. they stand between -- they are the kind of final barrier between a full-on entry into hamas, a tactical resolution by the israelis. and they will continue to use the hostages to buy time. they have many to work with. the reports have been upwards of 200 hostages. and we will likely see a continued, very sm

as andrew mccabe noted earlier the boat launch was the last place he was known to be, so it's not surprising at all to me that he was found today apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. but i think it was really important -- everyone seems to be really preoccupied with did he die two days ago or was he on the loose or did he die today? i can almost guarantee you he was within tworsf committing the crime, so i think our take aways are complete relief. our hearts are with the victim's families. but the overall message here is that the signs were there. we're never going to stigmatize mental illness, but we have to look at the fact that this was a man who got care, was in a facility for two weeks this summer, and still was able to get guns. let's focus on what we can learn

and the official confirmations from the authorities, i want to bring in the fbi deputy director andrew mccabe, who is with us. we were hearing just a few hours ago in the press conference at 5 p.m., they had no major leads, no real significant sightings of this -- of this suspected shooter. i mean, it shows you how quickly all of this can change. >> it really does, kaitlan. these man hunts, as we have seen even over the last couple of months, with the few we have tracked, you really never know where they are going to go. in september with the inmate manhunt in pennsylvania, we had sightings of the escapee on a very regular basis, a couple times of day, he was tripping cameras out in a park near the prison where he escaped, showing up at people's houses, stealing things from garages. this thing was very different, there hasn't been a trace of him since the shootings on wednesday night. which, you know, raises all sorts of questions in investigators heads, quite frankly, the resolution here is a common one. it is very common that mass shooters end up taking their own lives. and despite that, in

. >> joining us now, andrew mccabe and also easy really special envoy for combatting anti-semitism.hat the fbi director says regarding moving quickly, what does that mean? >> well, phil, it can mean a whole bunch of different things depending on the sort of threat that the fbi is focused on. so if they have credible information about a specific threat, that will prompt an investigation by the fbi joint terrorism task force in the community where that threat exists. the joint terrorism task force, there is about 200 of them around the country. they are made up of fbi agents and local partners for exactly this purpose. but on the other end of the spectrum, it may simply mean reaching out to state and local officials or community officials, people in the faith based community to explain what these threats are to help people understand what the threats are and to protect themselves during times of elevated risk. >> and you've just returned from israel, your children i believe are serving. >> i live there. i just came to be able to engage here. >> thank you for what you do and for what t

. >> and former fbi director senior law enforcement analyst andrew mccabe is here with us. when you look at this photo that john was talking about there, you can see a clear image of the suspected shooter's face. how long does it take them to if i go out who this guy is, basically? >> yeah. it's not an exact science. there are some things you can do technically with facial recognition and against publicly available data sets. i'm sure they're taking advantage of that. if the photo is not quite clear enough, the success with that can be a little bit spotty. they're very much relying on crowd sourcing and the public calling in and people who might recognize this person. so the more photos they can get publicly released, the better off they are on that score. but the big development is the photograph of the vehicle. once you have that, you can track that back through the registration typically through the owner or the operator. if not, this guy specifically to someone who may own the car and know who he is or have loaned the car to him. if they can put him in that car, which w

. >> andrew mccabe, with your experience with the fbi, they certainly have time on their side here. i mean, if this is the location that they feel that they have control of the perimeter of, there is -- is there -- is there a clock for them? >> not really, anderson. it's -- you know, if they were confident that there was someone inside and maybe that there was a danger of hostages or others getting hurt, you know, you might want to take advantage of the element of surprise in your approach to the residence. and in a situation like that, there is more of an urgency. but that's clearly not the case here. there is -- they have forsaken any element of surprise. they've been yelling at the house for quite some time. so what you're seeing here is a very slow and steady escalation of technique. they start with the safest, cleanest, lowest risk thing to do, and that is to pull up, stand behind your armored vehicles, and announce your presence and demand some sort of compliance. whether you are confident there is someone in the building or not, you would always do that first. it seems that t
