she has an exclusive interview with bhp billiton's ceo, andrew mckenzie. sharon?> reporter: of course, much of the discussion here at this conference has turned from talking about global competition to of course conflict in ukraine and the tensions between russia and the west, and that is a focus i would like to start with with you, andrew mckenzie, ceo of bhp billiton. you do not have operations in russia, nor do you do much business in russia, but still, what is happening there, what is transpiring will have an impact on the global energy landscape. how do you see it? >> we do everything with a very long term perspective. so most of our investments, we are making for several decades. we use that long term crisis deck to decide that. we like everybody else just have to wait to see what happens over the next few weeks and what that means for the global economy and the trade in our goods and services. >> sue was talking about the fluctuations in share price and there have been brokerage firms out there talking about the declining price of iron ore, the impact that

andrew stevens in kuala lumpur. in beijing david mckenzie is joining us. what are you hearing?earing is that this is coming from a chinese state organization. they released these three photographs taken from satellite images. definitely significant because of the size and location where they say these objects are, which they're calling a, quote, potential crash site. they say these are in the vicinity nearby southeast of where that plane vanished early saturday. two questions i had. one, why did this take so long to come out? the answer to that might be either they were examining these details for some time wanting to be sure, or for some reason, which would be more disturbing, they took their time to release them. the second question we all have is this significant or is it just another false lead that we've been having for days since the beginning of this mystery? >> two-thirds of the passengers aboard that malaysian airliner were from china. i assume the grief there continues. give us a little sense of how people in china are reacting to what's going on. >> well, the people

andrew, kate, stand by. i wanted to go to beijing. joining us on the phone is david mckenzie. been monitoring the situation there where families were told half an hour before the malaysian prime minister made the announcement. david mckenzie, we will try to check back with you. let's go back to kate and andrew stevens. kate and andrew, we have been told that there is a very real possibility of bad weather moving into the area. what do you know about it? >> reporter: it is honestly changes by day and can change within the day. yesterday, when i was up with one of the search teams, the conditions can change on a moment's notice when you are out there. we were flying at 500 feet above the water at one point, 200 feet above the ocean surface at another. it went from complete fog, zero visibility to wide open spaces. you could see for miles. the visibility is so key. we can talk about it but when you're out there, you really understand. if you can't have eyes out the window of these planes, you cannot spot anything. it has been changing quite a bit, even today, andrew. >> reporter:

andrew stevens, thank you. the focus also needs to be on the families of those missing. most of the passengers on flight 370 are from china and families there are understandably on edge. david mckenziewith family members gathered in beijing. he's joining us now. andrew, what is the latest? >> well, kate, here at this hotel there are hundreds of family members waiting for any news. and many of them say that they don't believe this is the plane. one man coming out of the conference room minutes ago saying he believes the plane landed somewhere that his loved ones are okay because obviously if the news comes up that this debris spotted out in the southern ocean is the plane, it will extinguish the hope that these families have been clinging to all these days. nearly 13 days now they've got paramedics on the scene here. several ambulances. i spoke to at least two psychologists and they've told me that they expect if the news does come and the news is bad that the response will be overwhelming. we've seen those angry and frustrated responses here for days in beijing and across the region. and they're clinging on to hope. but at this stage, that hope is diminishing. the families here sayi
