now we bring you a few segments starting with andrew sullivan. on book notes in 1995 to discuss his book virtually normal, an argument about homosexuality. >> what role does the government play in the gay person's life? my. >> guest: id place first of all, a very fundamental role. i think what it doesn't do -- maybe us to start to -- start with what it doesn't do. if you're a soldier you can get thrown up by the u.s. government you can get your telephones tapped. you can get your mail rifled through. and buchanan beaten arrested, strictly speaking, for sexual relations in many states in this country for doing your for just having a relationship one which can be involving sexuality and now. that would be -- the government can go into someone's bedroom, arrest them, and it was constitutional do so. so those would be proactive axe of the government. the government of the united states and the government of many other countries, the only people that it picks up and says we can actually actively make your life hearten when a gay people. tear the eleme

when you look at people like evan wohlson and andrew sullivan talking about gay marriage, you look at a generation ago, people like larry cramer, david rothenberg, people if you will, leaders in the gay rights community, particularly around the aids crisis, that the gay community didn't have the luxury of silence because silence was implicit with death. and so the gay community began to become politically empowered. and when they rose up, people saw their sons, their daughters, their mothers and fathers. and i think that created a change. what i would say to young persons interested in elected office today is to be who you are. but i don't want to be presumptuous. because i was talking to a group of young lgbt students down in washington, d.c. a young gal, she was in high school, sophomore, talked about how she came out. and she was kicked down or pushed down a flight of stairs by a group of guys who taunted her, who gestured at her. there was no backup from her principal. there was no backup from her teacher. literally, for 2 1/2 years, she led a pretty horrible life. so authenticity

. >> let's throw in one more name, andrew sullivan. although he has not supported candidate for president since bush the first time, is a conservative voice for those certain kind of conservatism. and was almost alone in advocacy of gay marriage at the beginning. and look at what has happened. it's absolutely extraordinary. >> and chad, i want to bring you back in here. we're going to be looking ahead to d.o.m.a. and prop 8 and the supreme court is going to be hearing arguments on those cases. some people have said the best thing for the republican party would be four the court to strike down both of those provisions so they don't exactly have to litigate or plant a flag on their opinion regarding gay marriage any more. it's settled law of the land and everybody can forget about this being a divisive issue and move along. what do you make of that? >> well look, there's no question that congress, that passed d.o.m.a., certainly has a responsibility as many there have tried. to repeal d.o.m.a. d.o.m.a. is before the supreme court next we

i'm becky quick along with andrew ross sorkin. brian sullivan. joe will be back from vacation on monday. let's get right to the news of the morning, though. a senate committee will grow current and former jpmorgan executives today. at issue is the bank's handling of the london wale trading losses. ahead of that hearing, a scathing report was released last night suggesting that jpmorgan officials ignored growing risk and hid losses from regulators. it accuses the bank of changing risk model toes work around capital rules. ceo jamie dimon comes under heavy criticism from the senate panel. he is not scheduled to be among the bank officials testifying out there today. although some are wondering if he will show up and defend himself. it was a rough night for jpmorgan. in a separate story, the fed is telling the bank and rival goldman sachs that their plans for maintaining proper capital levels are weak. regulators are ordering both firms to revise their capital plans by tend of september. the fed turned down similar requests from allied financial and
