barn that they had found in i think new hampshire and brought down from there. she went there and started renovating it. it didn't have insulation or heat and martha and andy did a lot of that work themselves, plastering, and reshingling. sanded the floors, and wallpapered, and painted. martha was very careful to preserve things like the original floors and to use historically accurate paint colors. that was the first inkling i had i think that making a home, raising a family was more important to me than anything else. in recent months, members of my administration and officials of the committee for the re-election of the president have been charged with involvement in what has come to be known as the watergate affair. it was during watergate. i remember painting the house from top to bottom. this is a big, old farmhouse, painting it by myself on a ladder listening to watergate, trying to figure out what my life's going to be like watching america's government fall apart. and i decided then and there that the home was really my place with the sense of security, the sense of being able to relax within the confines of your own world. i loved decorating, des
