andy beshear joins us now.ernor, welcome to the program. >> thanks tofor having me. >> what are your top one or two benchmarks for deciding on reopening school campuses? >> well, our top benchmarks all come down to the safety. safety of our students. safety of our teachers. safety of everybody that comes in and out of that building. we're in the midst of a worldwide health pandemic. and i as much as anybody, having a 10 and an 11-year-old, want to get my kids back into school for in-person classes. but it's got to be safe. so i'm going to be looking at it as a governor and as a parent. so we're going to be looking at the rise in cases, how much we're increasing week over week. last week we had by far our largest totals overall. we're also going to be looking at our positivity rate, trying to plateau it and then looking for it to start coming down. listen, our teachers are some of the best of us and i'm not going to put them in a dangerous place. but we've taken some really important steps in kentucky. we have a

joining me now is the governor of kentucky, democrat andy beshe beshear. you heard dr.e check your state. basically, it sounded like there's a fear you're not in the red zone yet, but you could be. tell me the situation as you see it right now, sir. >> well, we're in a very dangerous position in kentucky. where we had had a very good control to the degree we can have good control of this virus. we had had a real success in dealing with covid-19, of people coming together, doing the right thing, of not just flattening but crushing our curve. but what we have seen, and in different pieces since maybe the beginning of may, is a steady increase in cases, and those cases have really started escalating the last four weeks. and so i think it's fair to say that we're at a point in time that probably florida or california or texas found them in weeks if not months ago or maybe a state like oklahoma, which seems to be suffering, found themselves in weeks ago. but i think what will be the difference here in kentucky is we're taking aggressive action right now. i want to do everyth

joining me now is the governor of kentucky andy beshear.overnor, welcome and thank you for joining us. >> thanks for having me. >> i want to know why you issued this order and how exactly you define it. >> what we are seeing across this country is an explosion in cases. we see records set every sim day for the united states and then we see states like florida that has had more cases over the last, what, three days, 72 hours than kentucky has had during this entire pandemic. you see states like arizona, 1.5 times bigger than kentucky but is currently running out of bed space and icus. you see how fast that can happen. in kentucky, i think we have done a better job than just about anywhere in containing this virus in flattening our curve, but we have recently seen a real increase that suggests that we are also going to have escalating cases. so i want to do the same thing we did that made us successful before, take aggressive action early so that we are not trying to stop this thing when we have thousands of cases just when we have hundreds o
