andy slavitt joins me now. he's the white house senior adviser for covid response. the show and lots to talk about today. i want to talk about the crisis we see there. i see from viewers the concern that the variant spreading in india could make it to the u.s. do you know how effective the vaccines are against that indian variant? >> thanks for having me on. it's an important question. we will see data coming out on this in the coming week. i've seen some early data which is quite relieving and confirming that shows that this variant, while certainly causing more trouble is not as troublesome as, say, for example, the south african vaccine -- sorry, variant. therefore it looks like we will get very low levels of protection from the svaccine an if they aren't vaccinated they will be more exposed and if they are vaccinated and there will be very good levels of protection so far. >> just to recap, we could see data soon in the coming week that shows the u.s. vaccines, pfizer, moderna and johnson & johnson, that they are -- it's encouraging news that they are pretty eff

joining me now, white house covid response director andy slavitt there.n the show tonight. you know from spending time on the hell site that is twitter, there is much confusion about when and where to wear masks, especially after the latest cd guidelines came out. you have different state and city guidelines and now dr. fauci is saying we could lift indoor mask restrictions in the very near future. how is that possible when only one in three americans are fully vaccinated? has the messaging on this issue just added to the confusion out there? >> good to be with you tonight. look, step one, everybody get vaccinated. if you're not sure about getting vaccinated, talk to your doctor. talk to your pharmacist. i think they will show you the data which shows you should get vaccinated. if you do, i agree with dr. fauci. there is increasingly going to be the world much more close to normal. the cdc has already said if you're outside or you're inside around people who are already vaccinated, you don't need to wear a mask. i think there are some occasions where they

andy slavitt is senior advisor to president biden. he joins us from the white house.ent about the use or nonuse of masks and the social distancing. why did it happen yesterday? did something change in the science? what caused you to decide to do it yesterday? andy: thanks for having me on. this was a decision made by the cdc, which the white house learned of only at 9:00 the evening before. what the cdc director said it she saw three things happening, which persuaded her. the first is a fairly dramatic drop in cases. there was next financial rise in cases, there is also next financial fall. the vaccine, there was evidence in the real world they were working not just at preventing illness but at preventing transmission, which is a piece people suspected but were not sure of. there was sufficient data out of that. third, vaccines are now available to all americans 12 and over. those three elements are what caused her to make that decision that was announced yesterday that if you are fully vaccinated comey do not need to wear a mask. david: if you are fully vaccinated, i
