joining us is andy slavitt. he's the author of a brand-new book out today "preventable: the inside story of how leadership failures, politics and selfishness doomed the u.s. coronavirus response." andy, let me start with the news on the variant. this study which says it may be twice as likely to be spread, leads to double the hospitalizations. it's rising quickly in the uk and here in the united states. what is your major concern with this variant? >> well, certainly we have a lot of concerns around the globe where we're not able to get vaccines quickly enough. the u.s. commitment that we announced last week of 500 million vials will help but it's going to be a long time coming. here in the u.s. it's a better picture if you're vaccinated. so for those vaccinated, the vaccines are proving to be quite effective, even against the delta variant. so very little to worry about. if you're not vaccinated, the delta variant will spread in your community more quickly. it will take less exposure to get covid-19. and so this

walensky said about how much we will miss andy slavitt. andy, you are a class act, and we will miss you greatly. what i'm going to do right now is spend the next couple of minutes talking to you about a subject that has gained a lot more attention over the last few days, and that has to do with the variants in general, but particularly in the variant which we now refer to as delta, or the b1617.2, which, in fact, as you know, originally was noticed in india and dominated in certain states in india, but now has spread throughout other elements and other areas of the world. next slide. so let's just take a quick look at that. it's reported in 60 countries, including the u.k. and the usa. clearly, now its transmissibility appears to be greater than the wild type, named the alpha variant. it may be associated with an increased disease severity, such as hospitalization risk, compared to alpha. and in lab tests, associated with modest decreased neutralization by sera from previously infected and vaccinated individuals compared to the alpha. howev

this morning, andy slavitt addressed those rising concerns. >> i think we should think of this as covidook ten minutes to get exposed. now you can get exposed in five minutes. if you haven't been vaccinated, you should be worried. >> morgan radford is in miami, florida, where there's an effort to boost vaccinations specifically in the latino community. morgan, is this effort to combat vaccine hesitancy, is it working among latinos there? >> reporter: craig, bottom line is that it's working but it's not quite working as well as some officials had hoped. for example, as you mentioned earlier, 28% of latinos across the country have received at least one dose of their covid vaccine. here in miami, that number is a little higher, about 43% of latinos have received that vaccine. the issue, craig, is that's compared to nearly double, 80%, of their white counterparts here. that's the issue. while we see progress in states that have huge latino populations like texas, california, here in florida, they have seen a 10% increase in the last month. the issue again is that it is lagging behind the va

lead white house covid adviser andy slavitts says the fda is trying to figure out if it can extend the vaccine's shelf life and we have to get the world vaccinated. pfizer is expanding the vaccine testing trials in children under the age of 12. the study will enroll up to 4,500 children at more than 90 clinical sites in the u.s., finland, poland and spain after selecting a lower dose of the shot in an earlier stage of the trial. for now, the company is testing its vaccine at lower doses in grade schoolers than adolescents and still lower doses in younger children. if those trials provide a safe and immune response, pfizer is expected to request federal authorization in september or october to provide the vaccine to children ages 5 to 11. and a little later in the fall for children even younger, which could help a little bit. >>> and still ahead on "morning joe," senator joe manchin opposes one of the voting rights bills in congress. and now senator mitch mcconnell has come out against the other. what is the future of voting rights on the hill? we'll talk to the president of the nationa
