and i had studied elaine brown, angela davis, kathleen cleaver, and i knew of afeni shakur through tupac of her before i met tupac. but when tupac and i became friends, i was able to meet afeni on a very personal level and eventually i asked her if she would be interested in me producing or putting together a story of her life as a panther. and these were only two or three years, like between 18 and 21 of her life. as we started doing the interviews for this very -- i wanted to tell the story of the panther 21 or the new york 21. she kept going beyond that time in her life and i kept saying to her, well, that's a book. that's not a movie. we're just doing this. and eventually i was honored and entrusted with writing the story of her whole life. she wanted to share more than just that part of her life. >> yeah, absolutely. and lola, you also had an opportunity to interview afeni shakur. what are some of the things you learned about her in being able to converse with her and talk with her? >> it was interesting meeting with her because you've heard about her for years. she was this larger
