the national weather service in los angeles did a fantastic job warning well ahead of this storm. they were saying life threatening winds. sunday night/monday they were talking about these winds. what's happening, this is happening in concert with one of the driest starts to the season on record. if you'll remember, guys, i was out there in l.a. last year at this time. flooding. this is their wet season. so this is not a normal combination of having these winds and having it be so dry. so any fire that starts is impossible to fight. here's the other problem. you always have big high. that's what causes santa ana winds regularly, that four corners high, as we call it. sends the winds off shore. but enhancing these winds is that low pressure system. same one that's going to give dallas to atlanta a winter storm. that's hanging out and making a tieing temperature gradient which makes the winds faster. that's why we have extreme fire danger in that same area today, malibu, san gabriel, san fernando. the winds could stay in the 80 to 100 mile per hour range. then look what happens. thi

and using the terminology from the national weather service out of los angeles, this is about as badas it gets anywhere. you see this red flag warning which extends through wednesday afternoon in the hardest hit areas. this is where we have a high risk of rapid fire growth. but what the national weather service has just done is consolidated and expanded what is known as a particularly dangerous situation, or pds for short. and what's different than just a few hours ago is that it's expanded to include much of the san fernando valley and into central and eastern sections of ventura county. remember, the western l.a. county is where we have our palisades fire and our eaton fire. so this is a new area that we're keeping a very close eye on. and just to give you an idea of how rare these pds events are, they've only issued six in the past five years, four of which have been issued in the past three months. and we know what happened last week when they issued the particularly dangerous situation. the palisades fire exploded in size and caused the damage that you've seen on your tv screen.

over highways and ends up going through neighborhoods like this one at the foothills of the angeles national forest. that's how this fire got here in the first place. these engines, they're doing so much work of just following around these flames and trying to pin down. we saw earlier i spoke to a woman who had come back from being away about 24 hours, where she was told to leave her house. she comes back and it's gone. it's up in flames. there's no hope at this point for so many people, but we have also seen jake. this is something really beautiful that we've seen in this community. is volunteers coming up right over here. we have some of them clearing some of the brush, hoping that this will help keep the fire from spreading any further. we also spoke to some volunteers who are just going into people's properties, turning on their garden hoses and just swapping the whole house, getting that water into the walls, hoping to keep the fire from spreading into more of these homes. but firefighters have, in some of those instances, told us then it's too late. get out. we want to make sure that y

just one of a number of fire sending up smoke in the angeles national forest. cal fire says that one broke out wednesday about 50 miles north of downtown la. about 348 acres in size right now. good news is it's about 40% contained. hopefully they can get that one knocked out so they can focus on the other larger fires. one of the bigger fires is called the hearse fire, which isn't are not too far from san fernando. >> and they've been using it fighting it by air. you can see the fire tired of being dropped there. there are mandatory evacuations that fire has grown to 855 acres. it's 10% contained and compared to the big 2 fires which are 0% containment. want to take a closer look at those now, the eaton fire, which is in altadena that has burned more than 10,000 acres. 0% contained in. this is the one that is blamed for 5 deaths so far. the emergency crews also say that some firefighters have been injured and some civilians have been injured. this is a fire that broke out first on tuesday night. remember when those winds gust for 100 miles place? yeah. we also
