angie, good morning. how is it looking? >>> good morning, willie.ortunately, we see the winds elevated, red flag warnings up. we're going to go through a peririod of fluctuations here where they ramp back up with another santa ana event. closer to the coast 30-plus-mile-per-hour winds. in the mountains some locations dealing with over 60 miles per hour. the peak today will be the first half of the day. we start to see a lull into the afternoon and then we ramp back up as we get into the overnight hours, so no surprise today. we still have that critical risk for much of this area. stretching down to escondido, that will be included in that, likely something we will see rough at least next week. here is the situation for late monday into tuesday. high pressure drops into the great basin. we're going to see 40 to 70-mile-per-hour winds as we get into early next week. this drops us also to those 5 to 15% levels of humidity along with the dry vegetation. there's no surprise that we're going to continue to see these situations stay in place for this regio

nbc meteorologist angie lassman is tracking the winter alert. angie. >> we've got plenty of winter alerts because of a couple different systems we're 40 million people across the northeast stretching down to the ohio valley and midwest. we've got a one quick moving system that's going to bring a little bit of snow across the central appalachians through the day today. then we gear up for the next storm system to emerge out of the plains. by saturday we'll see that heavy snow expanding into the rockies, and that system works into the midwest. we'll see the potential for strong storms on sunday across the south. but travel's going to be difficult with icy conditions and the potential for heavy rain. even as we get into next week. this is monday. you can see icy conditions still lasting. but plenty of snow expected across the mid atlantic, and the rain working its way out. when it's all said and done, the highest amounts of snow are going to be center aid cross i-70. notice up to a foot in places north of cincinnati and st. louis. right along i-70.

angie, good morning. what are you seeing there? >> good morning. dana said, the winds a little less than they were yesterday. i want to stress that they're not diminished completely. we're going to kind of see these swings of winds elevated, winds coming down. santa anas will stick with us for a long haul. we could have more events, even into next week.se right now, 17 million people still under these red flag warnings. winds are coming offshore. remember, that means we're not adding in a whole lot of moisture with the winds coming off the water. instead, they are going offshore at about 40 to 50 miles per hour through the day today. tomorrow, those increase. we're talking a range of 50 to 70 miles per hour across this region. let's talk about exactly where they currently stand. you'll notice closer to the coast less, 5, 10, maybe 20, 30-mile-per-hour winds. get up into the hills, get up into parts of the mountainous regions, and right now we have 40 plus-mile-per-hour wind gusts. 20 plus. that'll be the situation for this morning. as the day goes

let's go to meteorologist angie lassman for the forecast. what do you got for us today?day. i've got more of the kind of the same, the red flag warnings out west and the fire conditions there and also a winter storm to watch. here is what we're dealing with out west. 17 million people still under the red flag warnings. this isn't going to change anytime soon. we have the really gusty winds expected today. and dry humidity levels as we continue to track these five fires. we have seen improvement yesterday as the winds started to weaken. they ramped back up overnight. this morning, gusts over 60 miles per hour in some areas of the hills and mountains. closer to the coast, 10, 15, 20, 35-mile-per-hour winds are more likely. the winds will stay elevated through the first half of the day. they'll start to weaken by the time we get to the afternoon hours. this is 6:00 p.m. pacific time. single digits in a lot of spots. maybe double digits around there. it is a roller coaster ride when it comes to these winds going up and down with these additional santa ana wind events likely

angie, a lot of impact from the winds there on the ground, right? >> yeah.you're exactly right. and those are going to increase here as the morning goes on. so no surprise that we have this red flag warning extending basically from san luis obispo all the way down to the mexican border. these winds are going to ramp up today. and we've got what's called a particularly dangerous situation with that red flag warning. these are fairly rare to be issued by the national weather service. only a handful here in recent years. and we've got these extremely critical fire weather conditions lasting through the day today and potentially into the middle of the workweek. here's what's going on as far as our winds are concerned. >> later this morning, we'll see the strongest of the wind gusts in the next 36 hour period. >> that's 50 to 75 mile per hour winds expected. you can see, especially in those higher elevations. that's where it's going to be more likely as we get into this afternoon and into the evening, really, we'll start to see those wind gusts weaken slightly. >

let's go over to meteorologist angie angie lasman. >> unfortunately the winds are going to worsen as the morning goes on for folks in southern california. no surprise we still have the 19 million people under the red flag warnings. when we look at the three plain fires we're watching, there's so much smoke in this area, so many particulates in the atmosphere, it's picking up on radar. on top of that the way they're going to spread today is going to be immense. we have 45 to 95 mile per hour winds happening in the area of palisades. we're likely going to see the destructive wind gusts up to 100 miles per hour through the day across much of this region. relative humidity values dropping to single digits. all that means explosive fire growth across this region. the extreme risk stretching from glendale towards the coast including malibu. notice the critical risk extends down basically to the border. that extreme fire behavior is going to be likely through the day today. the wind alerts are up for the southwest. we have a high pressure and low pressure this area is sandwiched between. th
