nbc meteorologist angie lassman is tracking those high temperatures as well as some storms, just in time for fourth of july. good morning, angie. >> good morning, ladies. we've got some good news when it comes to the heat. we've seen a lot of the alerts tapering off and expiring. 24 million people included in these. they do extend into parts of the southeast, but only a few spots. places like raleigh still seeing that but out west, las vegas, san diego, phoenix still going to deal with oppressive heat through the day today. temperatures in the triple-digits from redding through fresno palm springs headed to 115 this afternoon. these temperatures don't get a whole lot better, though over the next couple days, we remain in the triple digits, extending into las vegas, palm springs and fresno for the long haul we'll see temperatures finally return to normal in those areas as we get into the later parts of the workweek. northeast still in the 90s, but not quite as oppressive as it has been we're dealing with the potential for strong to severe storms. does include 34 million people charlotte,

nbc meteorologist angie lassman is standing by. first, blayne, how are things shaking out so far? >> reporter: when it comes to flight travel, people are going to be bracing for possible delays today. i want to go ahead and look at what we're looking at so far. already starting with several hundred delays. right now in and out of the u.s. there are 807 flight delays. cancellations at 87. consider what we saw over the weekend and this is an improvement. yesterday's numbers, more than 7,000 delays, 631 flight cancellations. that certainly goes with what we saw on friday afterwards. yes, for people heading to the airport, know there could be some complications and delays. you talk about the record number of people traveling. consider this. on friday, ana, the tsa processed some 2.9 million passengers, almost that number. that's the highest single day number we have ever seen. we're certainly talking about a number of people going out and traveling and trying to take advantage of this. for people taking the the roads, we talked about the millions of americans doing that. angie can wei

. >> let's get more on the storms and the heat, let's bring in weekend today's angie lassman. >> i wishi had better news for that same area. we'll see another round of some of these strong storms working through and bringing with it some heavy rain. this is the same complex of storms that worked through parts of illinois and michigan yesterday, bringing some of those tornados that we reported. now, as far as the heavy rain is correspond, again, some of those hard-hit areas, places like vermont, new york, new hampshire, have seen these rainfall rates impressive. up to 2 inches per hour. this is not what we need when we're trying to clean up. when it's all said and done, we could potentially be seeing widespread amounts, maybe an inch to 2 inches, but localized amounts up to 5 inches across this area. that does include those same places that received that 2 months' worth of rain in a short period of time earlier in the week. and we cannot not talk about the heat. it is impressive across much of the country, including the southwest, but let's focus on parts of the southeast and parts of th

nbc meteorologist angie lassman is tracking the latest. >>> joe, we have these strong storms working through parts of oklahoma and into parts of texas where we have severe thunderstorm warnings in effect this morning. as you mentioned the system will continue working its way east bringing with it strong rain and storms. we'll continue to watch that here as we go through the next couple of days. notice the severe threat for philadelphia stretching down into parts of the mid-atlantic. we will continue to see the greatest risk be focused toward the southeast as well. shreveport, jackson and parts of new orleans included in this as we go through the afternoon hours today. hail, strong winds and, of course, isolated tornadoes possible. one of the biggest threat will be that heavy rainfall and repeated rounds of it with impressive rainfall rates up to 2 inches per hour. we have a slight risk focused down to parts of the southeast. but you see this bright pink here, that's a moderate risk for flooding. we'll see it working its way through the northeast and into the new england area and the

nbc meteorologist angie lassman has her eye on the latest. good morning >> good morning, guys. we still haved into alerts in parts of the new england area. that's what will stick around. we have the swollen waterways and lingering showers that we'll have to deal w espeith. it does include parts of new hampshire and maine. by the time we get through tonight, adding on a quarter inch of rain, maybe in the northern portions of maine we could have up to a half an inch. but now we look ahead to parts of the middle of the country dealing with showers, thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong storms at that. we'll have localized amounts up to four inches by the timeque get to the midweek it does include places like des moines, st. louis, we could see flooding concerns with this system we've got the same hazards, large hail, strong winds up to 60 miles per hour, and not ruling out an isolated tornado or two this goes from montana to missouri as we get into this afternoon and tonight. we will see the potential for baseball-sized hail possible bit time we get intos moines we'll see showers a

let's go to meteorologist angie lassman. >> any outdoor activities are good to go when it comes to air qualities here. look how great it looks outside in new york city right now. one thing to note, it is quite warm in the southeast, the southwest and parts of the northwest. we have 30 million people impacted by these heat alerts. these are going to stay through at least friday. we're going to head into the upper 80s to low 90s for some folks here. these temperatures are going to be oppressive, likely triple digits in phoenix. there is some relief. we'll start to get back into the normal swing of things as we get into the latest part of our workweek. it's not ideal when we have things to celebrate and it's dangerously hot in some spots. places like the northeast will end up in the mid 80s by saturday. we have scattered showers lingering in parts of the northeast. the midwest and high plains see a chance of stronger storms today. something you'll want to watch for, especially considering we have the chance for strong winds, hail and isolated tornados. this will be something you'll want t

also with us is meteorologist angie lassman. i grew up in phoenix. in the summer i'm used to putting a tray of cookie dough out on the dash and seeing how quickly it bakes or the metal on that seat belt singing your skin. what we're talking about is different. >> it's no secret, phoenix is hot. everyone who lives here told me they expect it to get hot in the summer. there's a reason why there are schools called the sun devils. this is a place that knows its heat. but when i speak to people who work at places like a salvation army, what they're saying is they're seeing this starting earlier where they're having to extend their hours for their cooling shelters. having to open it up on the weekends. they're doing that sooner than they're used to, and they're putting in that overtime for such a long stretch of time that they haven't seen in a while. i mean, we're talking about 13 days of these record high temps and more records just keep getting broken. so the thing to remember, we all know how dangerous this can get. we've seen those mountain rescues fr
