nbc meteorologist angie lassman standing by with more on the weather impacting these flames, but firstoser to the fire lines where nbc's dana griffin is joining us in malibu. dana, what is the situation there this morning? >> reporter: ana, good morning to you. many of you may have seen us earlier today when we were live. there was an orange glow all around us, fire flaming up. firefighters have done a pretty great job on this section of the franklin fire. you can see some flames on the side of me. for the most part, they have been able to put enough water on top of it to try to stamp it out. those santa ana winds have kicked up overnight. seven homes have been destroyed, eight are damaged. there are 1,500 firefighters working around the clock to try to put out this destructive wildfire. overnight, the franklin fire exploding in size, growing to more than 3,000 ache res, racin downhillsides, crossing the pacific coast highway and putting fire crews to the test. the fire fueled by santa ana winds gusting up to 65 miles per hour. the blaze shining so brightly on the coast it can be seen

nbc meteorologist angie lassman is tracking the potential flood threat. good morning, angie. >> you got that right. flood threat indeed. we've got heavy rain across this region. extensive snow melt also happening. this is something we see lasting through the day today. this means that the slow travel is something you deal with along the east coast through the day today. we'll see isolated flash flooding potential across new england as well. none on the backside of this system. it's the lake-effect snow that gets our attention. downwind of the lakes is where we see the potential for piling up. localized amounts up to four inches. more widespread, one to two. we need the rain across this region. so it's welcome, but difficult when it comes all at once. then we have another chance to see multiple feet of snow in some of these persistent bands of rain. this will leave us the potential of travel issues, not just because of rain and snow but strong winds. 28 million people are under wind into the mid-50s with full sunshine for mobile. showers and thunderstorms f

angie lassman is tracking it all for us. good morning, angie. >> morning, frances, more snow on the way for our friends across the snowbelt region. 5 million people under alerts. that's where we're going to see the heaviest snow bands setting up. two to three inches per hour, that's what we'll see today especially east of lake ontario and lake erie. tomorrow, a much quieter kind of scene across this region and milder highs will start to work in here by the time we get into the weekend and a little rain is on the way, too. here's what we're likely to total across that region. we've got a foot to a foot and a half in some spots. the higher amounts could be close to two and a half feet. we also have chilly alerts for temperatures that are sub zero. minus 25 below for what it feels like in minneapolis. 13 below in chicago. and these temperatures aren't going to rebound a whole lot by this afternoon. notice a high of 17 for chicago. mid-20s for columbus, even out towards the east coast. snowshowers on the way. low 20s for detroit.

. >>> let's turn to the detroit lions' fan, meteorologist angie lassman, what's your prediction for theame? >> if i say anything but the lions, i'd be in trouble. there would be a lot of people coming for me on that front. we've got busy winter weather. it has arrived. let's look at erie, pennsylvania, where last week whole lot of snow falling in that region. you see still on the ground. we've got the worsening conditions over the next day or so. the winter hearts are up. -- alerts are up. a blizzard warning in effect. notice how expansive the alerts are across the region. the great lakes to the northeast, up into new england. we've got some of that snow working in. some of those bands with this quick-moving clipper system that's going to be out of here before you know it. but the impacts will be felt today and potentially into tomorrow. notice even this evening those strong winds and intense snow bands will still be sticking around. and especially, you guessed it, downwind of the lakes. the lake-effect snow ramping up even into tomorrow. east of the lakes impressive snowfall amounts on

. >>> time for weather and angie lassman for the winter weekend forecast. >> weekend is here, and itere they've already received plenty of snow, especially downwind of those lakes. that's where it's currently snowing. you can see the winter alerts, none as expansive as they have been in previous days. notice again on that east side of both lakes, we see those in effect. it will likely say that way through the day today. one thing to note -- the snow sticks to the forecast in those regions through the afternoon hours. and then tomorrow we gear up for our next clipper system that's going to work its way into parts of the interior new england area as we get into the later portions of your saturday. so heads-up there. we'll still see some of the steady snow working into places like upstate new york for your saturday plans. when it's all said and done, the highest amounts, you guessed it, are downwind of the lake. upwards of a foot in spots, maybe higher amounts. general region, an inch, three inches. the highest amounts centered across the same regions that they have been for a council o

. >>> let's check in with angie lassman with the check of the forecast. we look at the board, angie. it is cold. >> one word. brrr especially in the plains. we have seen temperatures dro in the teens and 20s. in minneapolis, 9 degrees. below zero for upper peninsula of michigan. columbus, more of the same. as far as nashville, a temperature of 41 degrees. by this afternoon, we keep the cooler than normal temperatures across the northeast and mid-atlantic. notice where the more mild conditions are. dallas, low 70s. kansas city that 50s. the milder conditions are e goin to spread north and east as we get into the day tomorrow. you will peel back the layers in parts of the great lakes and midwest. we head to the mid-50s for st. louis. nashville at 59. 70s for the center of the country. look what happens as far as the early part of our next week. we start in the mid-40s or upper 40s for monday. we get to the upper 50s on tuesday. it will feel spring-like and upper 40s on the way by wednesday. that's the look at the weather across the country. storm ranger is l

meteorologist angie lassman has the details. >> hi there, ana. the all important new year's eve forecast and we have a couple of trouble spots. let's deal with the rain and snow centered in the ohio valley. this system is on the move for the next day or so. the big picture for holiday travel elsewhere, we don't have a lot going on. there is a lot of sunshine out west. if you are hitting the air or roads, it will be this region, chicago, cincinnati, pittsburgh, a couple of delays here and there. i-97, i-70 could be wet or snowy in parts of michigan where we will see the snow working through. otherwise, the rest of the country looks pretty good. here's the system that we will close out the year with. it will eventually as the later parts of the day get on work its way into the northeast, bringing rain for folks there. we could see a couple of thunderstorms hugging the coast as well. there could be lightning associated with that. this system will be a quick mover by the time we get to the later parts of tomorrow as we kick off the new year. notice t

angie lassman. a lot of folks with a chilly start to their weekend. >> yes.n the south, they live in the south so they don't have to deal with the chill. unfortunately we have these alerts up for them as temperatures sit in the 20s, teens in some spots. macon 23 degrees. tallahassee at 27 degrees. huntsville into the mid 20s as well. this extends to parts of the carolinas as well. wilmington wake up to 22 degrees this morning. now, we've got some changes on the way. it will be a bit of a roller coaster ride temperatures over the next couple days. still this afternoon, we get warmer in some of those regions. 60s in tallahassee. 39 degrees in new york. these numbers are below normal for this time of year. but look back to the west. we have kansas city running 13 degrees above normal, into the mid 50s. even chicago warmer than they should be with the low 40s. that starts to spread east as we get into tomorrow. your sunday 46 degrees in detroit. we have 50s for indianapolis. huntington into the mid 50s as well. and temperatures across parts of the plains 60 degre
