bhp has won an extra week to convince anglo american on its $49 billion to go -- takeover plan. raised the value of its proposal for a third time earlier this week. let's get to martin ritchie. it looks positive for bhp. they get this one-week extension. talk to us about how the agreement or discussions are moving forward. what tends we get from both parties? >> the saga continues. we did think it was a make or break time yesterday, but as you said bhp gets another week to come up with the firm bid, and the most important thing here is the anglo management are talking with bhp for the first time. the world's biggest mining company has produced three offers already, all refused, but now they are still in proper negotiations at least. that is looking at it positively from that bhp point of view. the most important part is ironing out complexities around the deal in south africa. anglo is a company dedicated -- is a complicated company. it is a multistate bid where some assets have to get sold first. tom: $49 billion question, what will it take to get this deal over the line? >> it

well as a concern that time is running out on that wednesday afternoon deadline between bhp and anglo-americancritical minerals is in focus in particular in today's trading session. 6644 is what we are trading, some weakness for the aussie dollar but it is seeing potentially the resilience we have seen in trading and the aussie can withstand even a small move in that inflation number. but the broader picture of the less certain for the aussie, given some prolonged weakness and the fade we are getting from the policy measures out of china. we are of course getting the westpac leading index seeing just a marginal decline at this point. mostly unchanged, 0.03% month on month. annabelle: fairly quiet so far in parts of the equity market but more of the action coming through perhaps in bonds. as well as moves around the dollar. here we are tracking the japanese yen around the 157 mark but take a look at this chart here because you are seeing the japanese yen versus the british pound today. you at a level you have not seen going back 16 years. the weakest since august 2008. it is really that bet on

matt: what is this move from anglo american, what does it mean to you?it really change the structure of how these things are mined and shipped and sold? ankur: historically, what debeers has done is they have customers called site holders and they have to buy from them. 10 times a year they will say this is your parcel, they cut and polish it, it goes wholesale into the market. that structure may very well remain. the problem i'm seeing is debeers itself went from an operating profit of 550 million in 2022 to -315 million in 2023 and this year will be even lower. revenue for debeers was 6 billion on the core mining operation this year. went down to 3.6 and 23. a 40% drop. in a high fixed costs of business, that becomes the -- difficult in this year will be even tougher. historically they been a proponent for marketing behind natural diamonds but they are no longer able to do that. monopoly power is gone and the core economics of the business are very difficult now. matt: what else in the supply chain has changed the story? lab grown diamonds have been th
