these recent hearings we've seen, the criticism came from the president's own party, ron wyden, angus king, what did you make of it and what was the reaction afterward? were they satisfied with what they heard? >> well, not entirely yet but there were some things that did please them in the fact john brennan seemed to take seriously their concerns about transparency and he said, of course, that will have to be tested if he's confirmed and he can actually demonstrate he's heard them in the job. this has been pressure among democrats building for a while and this hearing gave them a chance to put it all on display which made it striking to have that many frustrated with the white house. when you hear dianne feinstein say why can't staff be involved? they have experts who work on their staff and, you know, if you were handed or i was handed a memo that was complex and we got a chance to read it but then they took it away and no one else could see it, yes, you had some oversight but you really didn't get a chance to study it to make lots of informed questions about it, that sort of thing. so t

angus king, independent of maine. >> great to be with you. i saw you had john bolton on.i don't think you should have eand i on the same program. i've been many for him in airports. >> i'm glad you're here. in dealing with the deficit, dealing with this spending, we just saw the clock, going and going. what do you think the president should say? what would you like to hear tuesday? >> let's talk about the spending separately. what i would like to hear is proposals for strengthening the economy. the debt and deficit problem is also a problem of economic growth. we don't have too many economic problems that a few extra points of gdp growth wouldn't solve. the economy is sort of okay, improving. housing is coming up. the stock market is doing well and manufacturing is coming back to life. if we can get the economy moving in a positive direction that will help with the debt and deficit and other issues. i want to hear concrete proposals for creating jobs and expanding the economy. >> how do we get there? you've been in washington, you're an independent. the parties are like t

joining me now, maine independent senator angus king. very good to see you here in your first couple of months up in the u.s. senate. one of the things that as an independent you have talked about is being that bridge between republicans and democrats to try and get some work done up there. with that in mind, i wonder if you would talk to me about what tone you would like to see the president take on tuesday night at the state of the union. a lot of talk post election about how he's more aggressive now, much less willing to deal with republicans. >> mathematics, he still has to deal with republicans. a republican house, a senate, with a democratic majority. the way the rules work, there is substantial power and as bill clinton would say, it's ar rit arithmetic. you use the word diplomatic. you can disagree without being disagreeable. and that's a tone he has to take. confident, strong, and yet being open to other ideas and compromises and getting the work done. >> how have you felt that he has done toward that end since the election? do

. >> that was in disking -- angus king, not dianne feinstein. jeremy, your response to those clips? >> first of all, senator king did a good job of raising some of these issues. he is due to the senate and did i get the memo you do not talk the white house officials that way, so it was a relief when he started to ask these questions in the hearing. you brought up the issue of the republicans asking tougher questions. what we saw in general the republicans were doing was engaging in a partisan theater of their own, where they made the whole issue about white house leaves for the most part, talking about in gauzy, which is sort of the second coming of 9/11 -- benghazi, which is sort of the second coming of 9/11 in this watergate-type scandal. while the republicans did as some good questions, there's something fundamentally dishonest and full of hypocrisy with the gop line on this. they have been hammering the department justice -- the white paper came out a couple of days ago that outline the legal casebasis for targeting u.s. citizens. they've been hammering away on the obama adminis
