fox5's anjali hemphill live on capitol hill this morning with the latest.ood morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, we've seen this happening all over the united states and now a similar effort is being pushed through here at the u.s. capitol building. there are currently about a dozen confederate sculptures here inside this building and only about four representing african-americans and that has cory booker tweeting out yesterday that he plans to now introduce legislation to remove those confederate statues here inside the u.s. capitol saying "this is just one step. we have much work to do ." fox5 was there yesterday morning as the city of baltimore tour their four confederate monuments down, all during the middle of the night. of course other confederate statues have been taken down in other states around the country and many state officials are supporting the removal including both the governors of virginia and maryland. in fact, a panel just voted yesterday to remove the roger b. taney statue at the statehouse in annapolis. inside the capitol buildin

fox5's anjali hemphill is very latest. anjali, just a sad story.ood morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, annie. d.c. police have made one arrest in this case so far. 21-year-old philip mcdaniel is set to appear in d.c. superior court later today but detectives here believe two more suspects were involved in that horrific crime. take a look at this video from the crime scene. the white car you see is what the 17-year-old girl was driving when she was hit by a bullet at saratoga and montana aveues northeast on thursday. a police report says two men were hiding in the bushes and then opened fire on a group of people across the street. the teenaged girl just happened to be driving by at the time. a second person walking in the area was also shot. now, at last check, the 17-year-old is still fighting for her life in the hospital and fox5 is not identifying her but we do know she was days away from heading off to college and sources tell us her mother is a officer with the police department. now, our fox5 lindsey watts spoke to a d.c. activist last

fox5's anjali hemphill this morning on capitol hill for us. jali, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, there are 12 confederate statues here inside the u.s. capitol building that are now on the radar of some lawmakers who want to see them gone but critics including the president question where will we draw the line. confederate monuments in baltimore are taken down. residents stood by as crews removed statues of robert e. lee, thomas stonewall jackson and others. and at saint john's church in brooklyn new york a longstanding plaque dedicated to general lee was removed wednesday. the chaos in charlottesville virginia has sparked a nationwide debate over statues plaques and memorials bearing the name of figures from the confederate era. the main argument for is that they're reminders of slavery. one chicago historian says he understands calls for the mayor to rename washington park but he thinks the debate should be about learning. >> i think some of these monuments could be recontextualize so it's an opportunity for people to learn. >>

our own anjali hemphill is live on the scene where just a short time ago police gave us an update on the barricade situation that followed shots fired. anjali, what's the latest. >> tone yes, i you heard all this come to i aclose on our area. it took police two hours to determine no one else was inside the apartment they surrounded earlier this evening and while the threats to the public is gone several police officers are still on scene here as they are trying to clear the scene it was earlier around 7:30 police say they arrived to the fountain club apartment complex for someone shooting off the balcony. and they approached and said the shooting started coming in towards their direction. so they sue oubdinged building and see haven'tly say three people came out and were taken in custody and questioned. earlier when we were going live we did get video of someone that was walking with a police officer in handcuffs and sources do tell us that is one of the people that police are talking to. again it's their relation to the shooting. but around 10:00 police did go into the apartments and

anjali hemphill has that part of the story. she's outside of the va in northwest d.c. an hally?being fired, former director brian hawkins is officially back on the payroll here at the department of veterans affairs and that has some of the va's top brass up in arms. now you may remember fox5's coverage of this big story earlier this summer brian hawkins was fired from his position as director here at the va hospital back on july 28th this was after months of investigation into allegations of missing equipment and dirty conditions at this d.c. fac hawkins also allegedly st secure va information to his and his wife's private e-mail accounts which is obviously a violation of va policy. now, hawkins claiming he was wrongfully terminated appealed his termination to the federal merit systems protection board which on august 2nd ordered his rehire pending the out come of the investigation. va secretary david shulkin has made it clear he's speaking out. does he not agree with this order he says he'll explore other ways to reverse the decision saying "no judge who has never run a hospita

anjali hemphill is live in baltimore at the park where one of those statues came down. anjali?reporter: allison, now that the news is spreading throughout baltimore that these four confederate statues were taken down overnight without anybody really being in the know about it a lot more people are starting to show up here to see for themselves. we've talked to people on both sides of the city's decision and also heard several people from the roadway expressing their opinion. either shouting it out at us at they're driving by. you can see there are some gathered here to take a look and what you are looking at is what used to be a bronze statue of robert e lee and stone wall jackson on horseback, but they took their last ride sunrise this morning if you will as they the statue was removed in the dark of night and hauled away on the back of a flatbed truck. you can see on the base here scrolled all over it with graffiti. there's also another statue that has been placed here it's been placed here actually several times in the past in define of this confederate statue. you can see a

fox5's anjali hemphill live in fairfax now with the latest. anjali? >> reporter: good morning.se three us suspects have been charged with abduction and gang participation. here at the fairfax county jail, and where they will soon be due in court. but take look at two of their mug shots. this is 20-year-old jose vincent so so and 18-year-old edwin moreno both of alexandria they've been arrested along with a female juvenile. now these arrests are in connection with the disappearance of this teenager 18-year-old miguel correll low last seen fishing in pond near his home at the end of pole road in alexandria on thursday auguse disappeared more than week ago. police now believe correll low went missing under suspicious circumstances believed to be gang related. fairfax county police also did not initially say he was associated with gang activity, but they are now changing that statement. as they are still currently looking for him. if you have any information you are urged to contact fairfax county police whether about his whereabouts or anything else about this case. you can remain

our anjali hemphill is live this morning from southeast. >> reporter: good morning, guys. we're here at 19th and p street where this all ended and three female suspects were arrested and was just within the last half hour that the suspects get away truck was towed away from here with what appeared to be a bullet hole in the front windshield. the scene was also cleared shortly after but this all began just after 2am this morning when a call went out an f150 white ford pickup truck with four black males inside believed to be involved in robbery off minnesota avenue. it was about an hour later when u.s. park police say say they spot add truck that managed the description then start to do pursue it. they say the sus suspectings led them on short chase eventually ending here on 19th street. now police say the suspects tried to take off out of the car on foot but they were later apprehended and park police do say during the apprehension at some point an officer's gun was fired. it is unclear why. but they maintain there were no injuries or damage
