patti ann: i'm patti ann browne in for martha maccallum. students were sleeping in their dorm rooms when they were awakened by fire. terrorists firing as people ran for their lives. it's the second attack claimed by al-shabaab in two weeks. >> reporter: what's harrowing on top of the details you described is the security forces are not able to go into the one remaining dormitory and rescue the hostages because there are militant snipers on the roofs of the other buildings and they are shooting down at the security teams who are trying to rescue those hostages. they are mostly females and christians as well. al-shabaab which has claimed responsibility for this attack has been asking students whether they are muslim or christian. letting the muslim students go. 810 students are known to be at the college. only 535 are not accounted for at this point. the death toll is 15 confirmed and 16 injured. given that large number of student not accounted for the numbers are very likely to change soon, the kenyan president has just addressed the nation.

some very sad news out of princess anne on the eastern shore there. according to police in princess anne, they received a call earlier today from somebody concerned that their co-worker had not shown up to work. they went to the co-worker's house, police did and did not seem to be any trouble signs, they went inside and found eight people dead. one adult and seven of the folks who died unfortunately, children between the ages of 6 and 16. just to give you a sense of where exactly this happened. this is d.c. this is maryland's eastern shore. for reference, this is ocean city on the coast. the town is a very small town and is down here on the eastern shore about three hours from washington. and again, eight people seven of them children found dead inside a home there. carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected. but there has been no official cause as of yet according to princess anne police. we have a crew that is headed out there and we will have a lot more details later on tonight. reporting live in the newsroom i'm tom roussey, abc 7 news. maureen: thank

i'm anne-marie green. the reserve deputy sheriff in oklahoma who fatally shot an unarmed suspect turns himself into authorities today. and this morning, his relationship to the tulsa sheriff's department is under scrutiny. robert bates has been charged we second degree manslaughter in the death of eric harris. the 73-year-old was a tulsa police officer from 1964 to 1965, and he's been a reserve deputy since 2008, bates donated to the sheriff's re-election campaign and has given five vehicles and other equipment to the sheriff's department. sheriff's family said that bates is a long time friend but tells the world that bates did not receive special treatment because of his donations. danielle nottingham has more. >> reporter: the last moment of eric harris' life were captured on police video. tulsa county sheriff's deputies say he was the target of a sting operation and was trying to sell a gun to undercover agents. >> it's a luger. >> a luger? german luger. >> reporter: an office wearing camera equipped gl

that could cut bills by 25%. >>> i'm anne makovec live in san francisco.a big announcements today that could put body cameras on every, single police officer in the force. the mayor is making this proposal. it would spend $3 million to buy 1600 body cams. a lot of this is about trust after several well publicized killings of unarmed black man by police across the nation. the sfpd has had its own issues like the text message scandal earlier this year revealing how racist some on the force actually were. we spoke with the police chief on our sunday morning show about accountability. >> i'm not saying we're not going to have a longer conversation to explain every time we do use any level of force. but i think that we're accountable. we welcome the criticism. wanted we'll come out of this thing better than we were. >> reporter: in addition to protecting citizens from bad cops, the cameras can protect officers from false accusations. the police commission would have to come up with a whole new policy of rules on how the cameras would be used. we'll learn more t
