kpix 5's anne makovec is on grimsby drive in antioch where people have now been allowed to get back into their homes. good morning, anne. >>> reporter: good morning. yeah. looks like all is clear relatively speaking. there are still some hot spots smoldering in the hills here behind me. but the fire has been contained and a lot of homeowners around here really feel like they dodged a bullet. this fire started at about 4:00 yesterday afternoon. and it threatens about 100 homes. it was very unpredictable. at one point people here in grimsby drive thought that they were safe when suddenly the wind whipped up the flames. police had to make reverse 911 calls to tell people to evacuate. in the hills, firefighters needed to stop flare-ups that came dangerously close to homes. >> we had firefighters in between where the homes were and the advancing fire so it was very close. >> reporter: now, one homeowner had the fire stop in her backyard but fortunately, when the flames died down, no buildings had been damaged. firefighters have not really begun to figure out the cause of the fire. but the con

kpix 5's anne makovec ise where several streets are still blocked off as investigators gather evidence. >> reporter: 23rd and bartlett here behind me. bartlett is closed down for several blocks in the mission. it all started with an armed robbery at around 3 a.m. at least two robbers pulled a gun on a man who was walking down the street. they took his wallet and his cell phone and then they ran off. police just happened to be in the area. >> they actually saw the guys running, the suspects running, and they were able to use their police intuition if you will for lack of a better description and apprehended the suspects. >> reporter: once they caught them they noticed that there was a trail of blood coming near where those guys were running. police say one of the robbers accidentally shot himself in the leg. he is now in the hospital. police did find a high-powered gun nearby that somebody had tossed over a fence. it was a mac-10 semi-automatic that may or may not be connected to this crime. they were also on

kpix 5's anne makovec with a look at how it happened. >> reporter: the little girl is in stable condition this afternoon. she is still recovering here at oakland children's hospital after being bitten last night. this is the rattlesnake blamed for biting a 2-year-old girl in bay point. she and the snake were flown by helicopter to oakland children's hospital about 8 p.m. her parents called 911 saying her leg was swelling after she was bitten in her backyard. >> parents showed us the area where the child was playing. we searched the area and found the snake in two minutes. picked it up with sticks, placed it in a jar. >> reporter: rattlesnake snake bites can be fatal but can be survived if caught early. a young boy was bit by a rattlesnake on a bike trail. the venom spread to his leg. >> mama bear instinct in me, um, decided to suck the venom out because that's apparently what "bonanza" dozen. >> reporter: don't to that. >> these are basic wound type stuff, soap and water, keep it clean, call 911 immediately. >> reporter: i spoke with the girl's grandfather. her leg is swollen and she is s

kpix 5's anne makovec has the very latest from the john muir medical center. she is live in concord this morning. good morning. >>> reporter: a disturbing situation when it comes to these two shootings in less than a week in the same area. we got reports that one person who was shot came here to john muir medical center in concord last night. this all started though at around midnight in the bay point area. this was the area of san marco boulevard and highway 4. officers blocked off the area for this investigation. again, it happened after midnight. the driver came to the medical center in concord. we don't know the person's condition at this point. this also sounds similar to a shooting along highway 4, the same area on saturday 2.2 miles away exactly when 20-year-old tomas mendez was killed on his way home from work. somebody shot at him while he was driving east on highway 4 near bailey road. we don't know if those two incidents are connected. we are waiting for more information. anne makovec kpix 5. >>> travelers in the south bay can now use ridesharing se

kpix 5's anne makovec joins us live from the bay point with the very latest on that.rning. >> reporter: good morning. this little girl is still in the hospital this morning. this is a newer development here in bay point but obviously, plenty of wildlife left behind. this is the culprit according to contra costa county firefighters. the snake here in the jar, the girl was bitten at 8 p.m. last night in her backyard. she was airlifted to children's hospital oakland. emergency workers had a warning for us all. >> as it starts to warm up and those animals start to come out, we want to ensure we have cleared the way from the house for the fire danger and as well for those animals especially snakes this time of year because they are coming out. we do rattlesnakes in the area. >> reporter: rattlesnake bites can be fatal but they can be survived if treated in time. one thing to watch for is tall grass as you can see on this street and directly across the street here from the girl's home is delta view elementary school. so something for everybody to be aware of. frank and mich
