mahmoud ahmadinejad say provocative things in the last few days about the holocaust and he talked to ann curry of nbc earlier today. let's take a listen to what he had to say. >> the legal frame works inside iran are very clear and every person has an opinion to express within the con fines of the law, they are free to express such opinion opinions i don't see any problems. >> okay, so, what sort of negotiating partner is ahmadinejad going to be for the president and any belief these talks become to get under way are going to be promising? >> the first yet big question. no one is sure if the election, attendant controversy and bloodshed makes ahmadinejad more open to dealing with the united states or makes him as hostile and implacable as he has been. the statements in the past two days would suggest it is the old ahmadinejad and he does see the holocaust as a myth. >> will he be addressing the u.n. next week and will that be a signal or clue as to what has changed? >> he may, although a lot of people point out about iran what counts is not what is said publicly but what is said privately behi

first ann curry in the iranian currie is in tehran with a interview with mahmoud ahmadinejad. ann, good morning to you. what's on the agenda in terms of your discussion with the president? >> reporter: this comes at a very critical time. our interview begins in ten hours. this is president ahmadinejad's firstnterview to any news organization in the world since last june's election which drew attention as you know because of the outpouring of protests. results coming at a critical moment as iran agreed with negotiations for the u.s. in what could lead to the first substantive talks for the two countries in 30 years. president ahmadinejad also coming to new york as you know next week to speak to the u.n. general assembly to ask the president about tehran's nuclear program, crackdown on protesters and also about the americans held in iran including the three young hikers who strayed across the border from iraq more than a month ago. so far iran only shade the case of shane bauerer, sarah short is under investigation. hopefully we'll get clarity today. >> we'll look at that exclusi

a lot of publicity about them, and ann curry did put that question and he did say he would see what he could do about it. but unlikely or uncertain whether that's going to be resolved any time soon. >> he seemed to strongly suggest, christiane he would release those americans if the u.s. or iraqis released five iranians, what he called diplomats being held in iraq. i thought they were released already. which seemed to suggest to me that either he was confused, didn't know what he was talking about or there's something else going on that we don't know in terms of other iranian diplomats maybe are held. >> welm, precisely. those five diplomats were a source of huge contention for the iranians for the last two years. and he did talk about it in the past. they were held for two years. so he's obviously aware that they'd been released. maybe there are others that he thinks are in custody or others that we need to find out. but clearly, there have been a lot about these three who have crossed over into iran. you know, i've talked to sources who say they have had cameras or other such things.

ahmadinejad, by the way, who told ann curry only a few days ago that he would not release those threeless some iranian prisoners that we don't even know what he's talking about, were released first. now he arrives in new york last night, and he told the associated press that he would look for leniency for the american hikers. that's one good thing. the u.s. officials, they don't know which ahmadinejad is going to show up at 7:00 tonight when he gives his speech to the general assembly. but it's 7:00 tonight when ahmadinejad is here, barack obama is going to be downtown hosting all of the u.n. delegates. so they're making sure that in the circus that is the united nations today, barack obama and ahmadinejad will not be in the same place at the same time, they hope. no hand shakes. >> looking a little bit at the president's remarks we'll be hearing later today, what strikes you so far, andrea, as a diversion from bush policies or maybe a reversion? >> reporter: well, he's talking about cooperation on big issues, nonproliferation and climate change and the middle east. obviously, his pol
