i'm ann notarangelo. two men will be honored this week as they saved two elderly people as their house went up in flames. don knapp tells us what happened. >> reporter: laura healy recovers what could be saved from her grandparent's fremont home, which burned early thursday. her grandfather, the 86-year- old sam healy and 76-year-old grandmother made their way back out the door, but trapped in the walkway inside the house as flames pumped windows around them. the gate was locked. it may have been the very sad end of the story had it not been for the men who saw that here. >> as i understand, they were trapped behind the gate because the gate opens up from this side and the gentleman, they let them out. and they got them away from the house and then they had called 911 already. >> reporter: they were both on their way to make a recycling pickup when they saw the smoke and came to the rescue. according to an alameda county fire press release, the men hollered into the smokefield house and made lots of noise

ann notarangelo says how police tried to prevent this type of tragedy. >> reporter: the crash happened at 10 a.m. and only in the last half hour did they start to remove the vehicles involved. they are gradually reopen mowry avenue. this all started with reports of a home burglary on mistflower avenue. a neighbor called police reporting he had seen three people break down a door and enter a home. he gave a description of the suspects and the vehicle. police got to the house as the suspects were leaving then pursued the charcoal colored chevy malibu. >> one of our suspects attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver failed to yield and drove quickly out of the area. estimated speeds were approximately 80 miles an hour. a short and let me emphasize a short pursuit ensued and then because of this suspect's reckless erratic driving the officer called off the pursuit. >> reporter: a mile and a half later a man driving westbound on mowry was hit by the suspect vehicle. he died at the scene. he has yet to be identified. >> make it clear our officer was not pursuing the vehicle when the colli

ann notarangelo is in richmond where opening statements in the civil trial began today. >> reporter: late this afternoon actually the first witness took the stand only for about an hour or so. that's a lieutenant one of the officers alleging racism in the richmond police department. but the focus of the day really was on the attorneys as they presented their opening statements to the jurors in a case that started in 2007. because there's a gag order in this case, no one was allowed to talk to the media. the claims against the city of richmond, the police chief and former deputy chief are harassment based on race, race discrimination, retaliation and failure to prevent discrimination. the case is being brought by seven senior black richmond police officers who claim racism is the reason a white female captain was promoted to deputy chief in 2006. lieutenant cleveland brown's attorney told jurors, my client is not necessarily upset about the promotion. he's upset about the process. the process of five lieutenants a captain and a sergeant claim was racist and stacked against them. anoth
