anne thompson here with me. i mentioned it earlier, anne. the catholic church in france launched an urgent appeal to raise funds last week specifically because portions of the cathedral which, of course, were built in 1160, to remind our audience of how old this building was. portions of the cathedral were crumbling. >> right and it's been ray renovated over the centuries, added to over the centuries, stephanie. like any historical monument that's used tore both tourism as well as a church, and it's affected by all the things that aflikt a city, air pollution, cars, buses, that all takes its toll so renovations would not be particularly unusual. the cathedral of notre dame, of course, is named after our lady, after christ's mother and this is the monday of the holiest week of the year in the catholic church. it would have been a very big week for this cathedral. they usually have 30,000 people go through notre dame cathedral a day in paris. on a week like this, perhaps they could get up to as many as 50,000 people, as people come to remember
