joining me on the latest attack is anna coren. she's in kabul, afghanistan. an anna, good morning. what can you tell us about the attacks. >> the latest happened the morning, four coalition troops gunned down by an afghan police officer. we believe he was working with the coalition forces. this has been a trend now for some time. it's taken the number of deaths to 51 so far this year. these green-on-blue attacks. afghan soldiers turning on their coalition partners who are fundamentally training them so that they can take over control, take over security of their country come the final exist in 2014. to put that into context, 51 deaths so far this year and we're only in the middle of september. last year was 35. back in 2007, 2008, there were a total of only four coalition deaths, so we're really seeing an uptick but the u.s. forces believe the insurgency is only responsible for 25% of the attacks there, randi. >> weren't the troops given word some time teague be armed at all times to hopefully prevent something like this? >> reporter: for sure. they have definitely put in these new

. >> anna coren joins us from kabul live. he couldn't say when the conditions would be right for the temporary lifting of cooperation to start. i want to talk about this. how this decision to stop some joint operations with the afghans could impact the fight on the ground. this has been a central part of the strategy to partner on the ground in the field, et cetera. >> reporter: sure, michael. this has been the cornerstone, the foundation of this whole mission transferring power from coalition u.s. forces over to the afghans. at the end of the day, the u.s. and nato forces are out of here, come 2014, whether the afghan armed forces are ready or not. it might sound quite harsh, quite brutal but that is the reality. at the moment there are 330,000 afghan forces, both army and police. they hope to increase that to 350,000 by the end of this year. and up to 380,000 by 2014. so, certainly a lot ahead of them. they say the joint patrols will have a battalion level or above. so what's happening out on the ground, the afghans will ta

our anna coren is live. >> reporter: it happened late last night. 20 insurgents stormed the the perimeter of the camp, which is in helmand province in the south of the country. and they used small weapons, rocket-propelled grenades as well as suicide ied vests to infiltrate the perimeter. now, you need to remember, this is a heavily fortified compound. some 20,000 nato troops are stationed down there. it is a brig british base, where prince harry is also stationed. but they shouldn't be able to penetrate this. it is in the middle of the desert. we do know that, obviously, a lot of vehicles enter and leave the compound. but at the end of the day, the fact that they didn't see these 20 insurgents coming is rather frightening. so we know that they were able to infiltrate, that they attacked aircraft, that they attacked structures on the airfield. and, obviously, two marines and several others were wounded. fredricka? >> anna coren, thanks so much for that update from afghanistan. >>> now to the man who made that controversial movie. the filmmaker is in california, and overnight, he spent som

let's go straight to kabul to cnn's anna coren there with us.to hit this point home, using a woman, a young woman, 22, to carry out this attack, that's incredibly rare, is it not? >> reporter: i know. it is rare. and it is also very frightening. she was actually kabul's first suicide bomber. there have been other femaled is bombers throughout afghanistan but never in the capital. really quite frightening. 22 years old. and in direct response to this anti-islamic film, she was driving this car, with 300 kilograms of explosives, 600 pounds, ran into this mini bus, eight south africans on board. we were there on the scene, within an hour of the explosion. and the engine was at least 100 meters away from where the crater was, from that blast site. nearby buildings, windows were absolutely shattered. just the power of this explosion, but, yes, i mean, women do not drive here in afghanistan, so the feeling is that perhaps she was allowed to get through the checkpoint without being stopped. >> you mentioned the eight south africans and make the point t

anna coren is in the afghan capital of kabul to tell us about the protests there. good morning. >> reporter: hello, carol. as you were saying, these protests hit the streets earlier this morning here in kabul. 300 protesters trying to make their way to the u.s. embassy were stopped by police. they attacked the police and 15 officers were hurt including the commander. two police cars were set on fire. there were plumes of black smoke coming from this area. we were able to get within a couple hundred meters, and then we heard reports they were firing into the crowd and targeting westerners. our security kept us away. but certainly this is a major disappointment for the afghan government. they were trying to keep a lid on the fury here. because obviously they were going off what happened last year when there were mass riots in relation to the pastor -- pastor terry jones in the united states burning that koran. there were dozens of people that were killed. they tried their best efforts to keep a lid on this by blocking youtube, blocking the video from going to air her

anna coren for us live in kabul. be careful, please, and continue to update us when you can. i want to move from afghanistan back to libya where the government has now made more arrests in connection with the deadly protests in benghazi at our consulate last week and u.s. ambassador chris stevens and three other americans were killed in that attack on our american interests in ben gas and i this is what it looks like inside that building where the attacks happened. as many as 50 people now have been detained in connection with this, but it is believed that they may have just been protesters, not necessarily taking part in the killings and as they sort that out the libyan government says it was planned by al qaeda who used anger over the anti-muslim film as cover for their planned attack. the fbi is expected to investigate all of this, but the agents have not yet arrived in benghazi because it has not been deemed safe enough yet. so we are told. we now have some more information on the man behind the movie, if you want to call it a movie, the anti-islam slam that's been posted
