cnn's anna coren is on the scene, joins us now with the very latest. give us the latest from the ground. >> reporter: well, john, authorities here seriously looking at putting full-face oxygen masks on these boys and then guiding them out. navy s.e.a.l.s guiding, leading them out through this labyrinth of a cave system that is now a real possibility. if they can get these boys comfortable with breathing through these oxygen masks, then we could see progress very, very soon. initially, they were discussing using more sophisticated scuba gear, but we know how technically difficult that can be. the challenges faced just by the expert divers that are here representing many, many countries. the challenges they have faced just shows how difficult it is. but they are racing against the clock. we've had a break in the weather, but we are expecting heavy rains in the next couple of days, and they've drained so much water, 24/7 around the clock they are draining water. hundreds of thousands of liters every single hour. and if we get a massive downpour, then that

cnn's anna coren has been on the scene in thailand wi. lopments a t this hour, anna. >> they are still looking at the diving option to extract those 12 boys and the coach from the cave that has had them for the last 11 days. we saw incredible video today of these boys. yes, they were smiling but their faces so gaunt, they have lost so much weight so their health is pair mount because they need them to be strong enough if they are going to get out of this cave by diving. you mentioned the full-face masks. well, they would wear them and basically all the kids would have to do is breathe. the oxygen tanks would be attached to the navy seals, they would have to climb on to the back of one of those seals and they would quite literally drag them through the cave. the cave, however is some four kilometers long and it's the narrow passageways which are the most challenging so there is the danger lies, we spoke to a professional diver who said there is real risk if children could get injured if this goes ahead so their preference is to go through t

cnn's anna coren following this story live in hong kong. anna, is there a sense that they are getting closer? >> reporter: absolutely, george. they are now one kilometer away from where they believe these 12 boys and their coach are located. now, this location, it's called pattaya beach. within the cave system. it's called pattaya beach because when it's not monsoon season the water there is meant to be crystal clear. now, this cavern, if you like, it's elevated. it's expected to be dry. it's spacious. so if they did manage to get away from the flash floods, which hit the cave shortly after they entered last saturday, or i should say now nine days ago, they think they would have sought refuge here. now, one kilometer doesn't sound very far. but within this cave system it is particularly challenging. in fact, the governor said it is the most critical time. the navy s.e.a.l. chief, he said these are the most difficult conditions. these divers have managed to get to this t junction which is one kilometer from this site. but put this into perspe

anna coren joins us.there an idea of when they can start bringing people snout is that possible at this point? >> reporter: obviously, jim, that is what everybody is hoping will happen sooner rather than later. you're right. we are racing against the clock. we're expecting a change in the weather in the coming days. and that will really undo all of the hard work that has been done. they've been pumping hundreds of thousands of liters of every single hour. something like 2 million liters of water have been pumped out of that cave. so they want to take full advantage of those -- that situation now inside the cave. but we know that areas are still flooded and they are going to be the extremely challenging areas that they will have to get these kids through. authorities are saying they're going to wear full face oxygen masks if they choose to go down the diving option, guided by these navy s.e.a.l.s, perhaps at times holding on to their backs and as a diver, an international diver working with the thai said,

and cnn's anna coren joins us now from thailand. na, what is the latest on this rescue operation as it looks like day is breaking there where you are in thailand. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, jim. dawn is breaking here and it is day 11 of this saga. the boys have now been inside that cave for 11 days. quite extraordinary. but they are surrounded by thai navy sales who have not left does is they slept last night with blankets. so their spirits are high. but you mention the realities of getting them out of this cave. obviously, the number one priority is their health and their safety. but they are now looking at ways to bring those 13 members out. they were entertaining using scuba equipment. this we know would be a logistical nightmare. the reason i say that is because the professional divers who have got to these boys have faced so many challenges. we're talking about experts here. but now we're hearing that perhaps they will wear full face oxygen masks. then they will be led out of the cave. the topography of the cave, it's a la

cnn's anna coren is live with the very latest in northeastern thailand. >> reporter: yeah, john, that'sight. we are at the staging area for this massive operation to try to rescue these 12 boys, age between 11 and 16 and their soccer coach who is 25 years old. now, they are trapped in a cave system. i want to show you the entrance to the cave system. this is as far as we can get to it. but this is the entrance and this is where divers, cavers, where the military and volunteers are heading down this path to the mouth of the cave. this is the only entrance so far to this giant labyrinth where the boys are. but they located them last night. it was miraculous. people were in tears. this country is really just so relieved considering so many people thought they had died. but you talk about the challenges of getting them out. they are more than 3 kilometers in this flooded cave system. and there is talk by authorities that they may have to use scuba equipment to bring them out. now, initially we thought that is going to be a logistical nightmare. some of these boys can't swim. just trying to
