anna coren, cnn, hong kong. >> thank you. >>> a tenuous hong kong. >>> meantime, growing fears latinerica could be the next epicenter for the coronavirus outbreak. brazil now has second most confirmed cases in the world. as cnn's matt rivers reports the situation isn't much better in mexico. >> reporter: yet another new day he record recorded here in mexico after friday evening mexican health authorities reported an additional 479 deaths as a result of this outbreak. the largest single-day increase in the death toll since the outbreak began. remember it was just two days ago that the previous daily death toll increased record had been set. that number was 424. clearly eclipsed just 48 hours later by today's figure of 479. as for the confirmed number of cases, mexican health officials reporting nearly 3,000 additional confirmed cases of the virus bringing overall case number to more than 62,500, bt t that is a lot of numbers and i want to put in context how bad the last week has been here in mexico. consider the overall death toll right now. 6,989. of all of those deaths, nearly one-t

i'm anna coren in hong kong. the u.s.overnment will begin shipping thousands of doses of remdesivir this week. the head of the company that makes the drug says the government will decide where the medicine goes. early test results show remdesivir shortens the duration of severe covid-19 cases. president trump said sunday the u.s. death toll from the virus could reach as high as 100,000. well, that's a substantial increase from his last estimate of 50 to 60,000 deaths. dr. deborah birx, the white house task force coordinator, offered even higher estimates. >> our projections have always been between 100,000 and 240,000 american lives lost and that's with full mitigation and us learning from each other of how to social distance. >> as more states begin to reopen, seven eastern states are banning together to purchase medical protective gear to prepare for a possible second wave. >> reporter: new york governor andrew cuomo appeared in a virtual show of force and unity with his fellow north eastern governors to make an announc

anna coren is standing by in the thick of it in hong kong. bring us up to date on what you've been seeing. >> reporter: yeah, michael, multiple rounds of tear gas have been fired this afternoon. we have witnessed a number of arrests made. police are just not showing any restraint. the sign goes up. they rate the blise the blue or sign and within minutes they are firing the tear gas. we are in causeway bay where we are seeing the scuffles. i want to bring you around to the protesters on this side. there are hundreds if not thousands. thousands of protesters spread out. and they're playing a game of cat and mouse with police. but these are people who feel that this could be the very last day that they are actually allowed to come out onto the streets and protest before it is criminalized. and that is the fear, with this national security law that beijing has said they are going to push through at the national people's congress this week. that once that is enacted, sedition, secession, sub version, treason will be banned. and they just think com

so, let's go now live to anna coren. she joins us now from hong kong. , what's been happening and what's the scene there right now? >> reporter: well, rosemary, we have moved to corday bay, a busy shopping district not far from where we spoke to you last hour. in the distance, you can see crowds of protesters who have been chanting slogans like "hong kong independence, it's the only way out." that is something that we've been hearing. it is no longer five demands or six demands. it is now calling for independence. this, of course, is in the wake of beijing saying that this national security law that it's proposed is going to be enforced on hong kong. a short time ago, rosemary, we were following the protesters as police came in, and one of the protesters was arrested right in front of me. police were spraying pepper spray, which has sort of been their go-to over the course of the day. i got hit with pepper spray. other members of my crew got hit with pepper spray. it's not a pleasant experience at all, a real burning sensation, but this is how they have

anna coren, what is china saying? >> reporter: a rather timid response. they're dismissing donald trump's tweet and claims of massive worldwide killing and that it all comes from the top. they say they're taking a responsible action, a global response and basically, yeah, playing the long game. this is not something that they are going to get caught up with. obviously donald trump wants to lay blame squarely at china. a series of angry tweets late last night but really, laura, what is taking place in the last 24 hours, which is also rachetting up tensions between the united states and china, is taiwan. as we know, taiwan is a very sensitive issue for china. it considers it part of the main land, part of its territory. pushing for reunification and has threatened that it will do it by force if necessary. the u.s. secretary, mike pompeo, yesterday congratulated the taiwanese at her inauguration. she's been re-elected for a second term. this has angered the people. she said she will not degrade taiwan. she will not sign up for the one country, two systems po

let's go live to cnn's anna coren in hong kong. what are you seeing there on the ground, anna?er: well, laura, we've been covering the protests all day. it started outside the legislative council building and then moved across the city. but protesters really never had a chance to gain the traction and momentum that we saw last year. police have showed zero tolerance, shutting down any idea of a protest. people chanting slogans, somebody playing the "glory to hong kong" anthem. police are racing in and detaining them. and to date, they've arrested over 300 people. we're in one of the busiest shopping districts here in hong kong, and we were filming as one of the people were being arrested, and we got hit with pepper spray. our crew did. it was an awful sensation of being caught up in tear gas, but this was quite painful. but this is something that protesters have been hit with all day. as i said, police showing zero tolerance to any sort of demonstration. you talk about that national anthem bill. that is being debated and it will be a crime to mock or insult the national anthem.

anna coren, cnn. >>> hello again, everyone. welcome this sunday. i'm fredricka whitfield. we begin with most of the country reopening, even though the coronavirus pandemic is far from over. by midnight tonight 48 of the 50 states will have eased at least some restrictions in stay-at-home orders. as you can see from this map at least 30 states are seeing steady or rising new cases. texas, one of the first to reopen saw its single highest day increase in the coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic. and the numbers are still rising. all of this as the white house pushes forward with plans to rapidly reopen the rest of the economy, president trump promising that a vaccine will be ready for distribution by end of the year. something many health experts say is a long shot. let's begin in texas where single-day records for new infections are being broken. it's an upward trend that began more than two weeks ago when the state started to reopen. cnn's ed lavandera joins us now from dallas. ed, where are we seeing these new cases? >> reporter: well, of these 1,800 new cases
