anna coren has reported extensively from afghanistan. and she joins me now from hong kong with more. anna, what are you learning about what is happening at the airport in kabul and of course on the streets of the capital? >> reporter: on the streets of ka kabul, it seems relatively quiet. people are going about their business. shops are open, there is traffic, we're not seeing the intense crowds that we did yesterday. and i think the reason is that you do have taliban out there providing security to that perimeter. clearly there was none yesterday. hence you had that breach and thousands of people were on the tarmac. i was in touch with a number of afghans who made it on to the tarmac and were witnessing those scenes. these were afghan interpreters who thought that if they got to the airport that perhaps they could get on a plane out of there. only a handful of afghans, and we saw that image of more than 600 crammed on to that transport plane that flew them out of afghanistan, i mean that obviously is the hope of so many others. but you n

anna coren, cnn. >>> now, we are, of course, tracking powerful hurricane ida as it gets closer to thewill have the latest update on what coastal states can expect in the hours ahead. we'll be right back. >>> you're looking at hurricane hunter team as it flew directly into the eyewall of the hurricane ida. this is on saturday. now, they are part of the national oceanic and atmosphere administration or noaa. and are gathering data that helps forecasters know what's going on inside the storm, in real-time. so meteorologists can make predictions. the plane, by the way, is a wp 3 d orion named ms. piggy. now right now, hurricane ida is barreling toward the u.s. gulf coast expected to rapidly gain strength. louisiana's governor says ida will be one of the strongest hurricanes to hit louisiana in nearly 170 years. now, it could make landfall as a category 4 along the louisiana coast in the coming hours. and on the exact same date as hurricane katrina 16 years ago. now, ida's already forced some evacuations. and the governors of louisiana, alabama, and mississippi have each declared a state o

. >> cnn's anna coren has reported from afghanistan for years, including on a recent trip there. she is with us now from hong kong for the latest on the taliban takeover. good to see you. so what do you make of the taliban's efforts to convince the world that they have changed and will now support the rights of women and that are of a begans saying about all of this? >> reporter: certainly they are trying to say all the right things such as women will still be allowed to go to work, they will only have to wear the hijab. but it is up to their interpretation. there was no clarification on what that really meant. and the fear for women in particular in afghanistan who if they were around for the taliban rule back in 1996 to 2001 was that it was absolutely brutal. these women were basically prisoners in their own home. they are only allowed to go outside wearing a burqa and chaperoned by a male relative. now they are saying we want you part of the workforce but within this framework. i was speaking to a 25-year-old woman a little bit earlier, she has worked for an international comp

. >>> let's turn our attention now to anna coren who has been keeping in contact with afghans from herome base in hong kong. and i've been getting a lot of messages, i know you have too, from people still inside the country worried that they are not going to get out. >> reporter: they are terrified. clearly they are not going to get out. that is the harsh cold truth because we know now that evacuations have basically stopped. no more people will be getting through those gates. perhaps the americans might let through american citizens, those with u.s. visas, but as far as the afghans holding those sivs, those special immigrant visas that say that they worked for america, for foreign companies, that has now ended. that window has closed. i'm in touch with women who i met when i was this kabul last month who were planning on going to the airport yesterday. the company which is a u.s. based company out of washington, d.c. funded by the u.s. embassy, u.s. state department, had promised them on the 7th of august that they would start evacuating the 128 staff. not one single person has beenl.

anna coren is following these developments from hong kong, and white house reporter jasmine wright is joining us from washington. i want to again with anna. you have reported extensively from afghanistan over the years, and you are monitoring all of these latest facts on the ground. what more can you tell us about this rocket attack and the earlier air strike just outside the airport? >> reporter: robyn, i think it's fair to say that we can expect more of these attempted attacks in the coming hours as u.s. troops prepare to depart from hamid karzai international airport. the deadline, 31st of august, that being tomorrow. but as for this attack which happened at 6:45 a.m. this morning, it came from an improvised rocket launcher in the trunk of a sedan in an area in kabul. we believe that five rockets were fired towards the airport. now, the cram system, which is the counter rocket artillery and mortar system which is activated when there are attacks obviously was able to, you know, counter those rockets. it also took out the vehicle. we do have images. i'm not sure if we have them yet

atika shubert is standing by in germany but we begin with anna co coren. as evacuations ramp up ahead of the loom ing, what is the lates? we keep saying the window is closing and from what i'm hearing the window has closed at least for the afghan allies, those being the people who worked united states, for organizations sponsored by the united states and let alone the afghan interpreters that worked for the u.s. military. there are tens of thousands of people who want to leave afghanistan. i'm receiving messages from a handful of people, particularly women, some who worked for an organization sponsored by the u.s. embassy in kabul who said we thought we could get an siv, we were told we could get an siv and that clearly has not happened because of the rapid pace at which the country has fallen. and this is the message that i received in the last 20 minutes, she said we fear that they will start searching houses to find people like us. i don't ever feel safe at home. windows are closed, doors are locked. we're dying at home gradually. you know, these are pe

anna docna coren is joining us . where do things stand this morning? >> reporter: as far as the airport is concerned, it is secure. we know that flights are coming in and out, those military flights, and that commercial flights may also be joining them. the state department said that yesterday they got 1,000 people out. now, that is a miniscule number when you think of the tens of thousands of afghans that they need to get out of the country by the 31st of august. that is still the deadline that they are aiming for. and you know, as soon as the americans leave kabul international airport, it is over. i've been talking to u.s. -- or i should say afghan interpreters who worked with the u.s. military who, you know, they were at the airport on monday thinking that they could perhaps get on one of the planes when it was possible to breach the walls and get on to the tarmac. they witnessed those chaotic scenes, they witnessed, you know, the violence that took place, the beatings. they reported that they saw this. and one of them said to me, this was the blac
