let's turn to anna coren in hong kong. these high temperatures soaring across china as well underscoring the urgency of the talks currently going on between china and john kerry, both seeking a middle ground on climate-related issues. do we know of any progress? >> reporter: from what we understand, john kerry has made some real inroads on this trip that will wrap up later today. he said that the mood is very positive and while talks have been complex, they have also been very constructive. in meeting with choina's vice president, kerry said takes universal threat that should be treated as a free standing challenge requiring efforts of the u.s. and china, two largest economies, two, largest pl polluters to help resolve. and there will be a joint statement later today to send a positive signal to the world and he praised kerry for the close communication and dialogue that he has maintained with china even during these months and years of strained relations. as we know, kerry is not your average u.s. dip lee matt. he was a p

anna coren joins us from hong kong. economic diplomacy janet yellen trying to achieve with this visit. >> yeah, definitely ly diplomac. she's expected to meet with high-ranking counterparts. what we'll hear, like blinken, officials say they're not expecting any significant breakthroughs. she's not expected to meet with chinese president xi jinping. yellen has long signaled the biden administration's goal with economies deeply entwined back in april, before giving testimony, she stressed the important of breaking ties with china and saying decoupling would be a big mass take. last week, at the paris sum set, she said, let me read it to you, as the world's two largest economies, we also have a responsibility to work together on gloshl issues. it is something the world expects of us. now, yellen's trip comes at a time of really heightened uncertainty for the global economy. china as we know is struggling to reboot its economy post-covid, follow a slew of poor economic data. while the u.s. is trying to contain inflation, an

anna coren is covering this live from hong kong. we've seen more meetings ramp up between officials from the u.s. and china over recent weeks. last being of course janet yellen's visit. and they seem to have a marginal net positive impact, trying to keep talking to each other. is the hope that it will meeting will keep pushing things in the right direction? >> there is hope and you are right, there is momentum, but there are plenty of issues and grievances as you know between the u.s. and china. but in just over two hours, antony blinken will meet with him on the sidelines of the summit. sergey lavrov will also meet with huang. huang was not supposed to attend this summit. the chinese foreign minister was scheduled to be there. however he is ill. blinken and wa this. g met in beijing last month. blinken was there, first visit by u.s. secretary of state in five years with the aim to reset relations and communication. we know that things are at an all-time low between the u.s. and china. janet yellen was there last week. john kerry he

anna coren, thank you. >>> u.s. meantime expected to announce a new military aid package for ukraine today. defense officials tell cnn that the weapons package will for the first time include cluster munitions that are banned by more than 100 countries but critically not the u.s. or ukraine. and nada bashir is joining us live from london. as we said, these are controversial weapons. what more do we know about why the u.s. is reportedly sending these now? >> reporter: the transfer of these munitions has been under consideration by the biden administration for some time now. and this is something that president zelenskyy has been asking for for months. of course this is a deeply controversial move. the hope is that this may help the ukrainian counteroffensive. we have of course the last few weeks seen the armed forces struggling to make any major gains in their counteroffensive and that is of course a concern for ukraine's international allies. but look, there are pros and cons to the supply of the cluster munitions.

. >> let's go to anna coren in hong kong for us. na, the backdrop for john kerry is whether or not the u.s. and china can work together on climate change. is this extreme weather which climatologists argue is the direct result? >> reporter: absolutely, the timing couldn't be better for the talks and what we're seeing is commitment on both sides to regain momentum. john kerry wrapped up before a meeting with his chinese counterpart. we're still waiting for readouts from both sides but the length suggests they've certainly covered a lot of ground. before the meeting xie said that china is improving dialogue that could improve the bilateral relations. almost awe year ago, climate talks between the two superpowers came to a standstill after u.s. house speaker nancy pelosi visited taiwan. and talks in progress. but as we've seen, a slew of u.s./china meetings to patch up this relationship. ess secretary of state, treasury secretary and now the enjoy john kerry. kerry and xie have a hist over to. they've met more than 50 times. they worked
