anna edwards and westminster with a fractured conservative party and a great britain trying to move forwardbrexit. we want to turn to that discussion yesterday of mario draghi in frankfurt. how it rebounds onto the federal reserve and chairman powell. james barty with us. it was good to see your colleague who joined us the next -- the other day quoted in the and they were talking about the overlay of higher debt , a need for a debt workout, and slower economic growth is disappointing mr. draghi. how dovish was he? he was mixed. they said they are going to reinvest proceeds from maturing debt sales. that was positive. there was the wake-up framed in terms of readjusting towards the capital, less buying of countries like italy. the market is struggling to deal with that. the message was qe has finished. that is behind us. wille now focused on when the ecb be able to raise rates, will they be able? at the earliest, the end of next year. the deterioration in the european economy could not come at a worse time as they start to unwind measures. there is a delicate balancing act for mr. draghi. to

anna: as you look back over 20 years with the euro, what other successes you attribute? there was a greatcolleagues, looking back over waslast 20 years, and ii surprised this quote came from iowa draghi. it's -- from mario draghi. it's like a mystery of nature. i couldn't believe draghi himself said that. you do look back on the last 20 years. geoffrey: three words: whatever it takes. anna: that's what helps of flight. geoffrey: as long as those works stand, no matter who's at the helm, the ecb and the chancellery in berlin, as long as those three words stand, it will plot along. anna: because it's a political's construct. geoffrey: and we should never forget that and the length they will go to protect the fruits of that project. but in terms of the next six to 12 months, some upside, but more of a dollar correction story. matt: if the germans have to bail countries out, as they see it, from a conservative germans perspective, it's not going to last much longer. if italy is the next ago or they want its people to retire at 42 and have the germans work until they are 65 to pay for it, that

great events coming up at the national press club. on january 8, we have a headliners news maker with the new planned parenthood president dr. lee anna weng and january 14, we have a headliners luncheon with the cvs health president and ceo larry merlow. so i have one more question for you and then a small gift. if a future u.s. coast guard commandante is now a lieutenant, what advice would you have for her or him? >> so i would say i like how you worded that because i would hope that the future u.s. commandante, a future, at the lieutenant level now may be female, may be of different cultural ethnicity than i am because i like to make sure everybody in the coast guard, everybody that considers joining the united states coast guard sees an opportunity. that is one of the things that my leadership team and i are very much leaning into, as the united stat coast guard that is more representative of the nation we serve. we have women in the ranks and smaller percentages of minorities and looking at recruiting hard on the retention front and we want every lieutenant to think they can be the next commandante. i want all of the enlisted men
