joining us now to impact all of this is co-founder for punchbowl news, anna palmer. these elections. anna, how do you see this playing out? not much good relations between mcconnell and scott prior to this, probably quite bitter at this point. do you think that he ultimately, mcconnell, that is, retains his post? >> to say the least, there has been a lot of fighting between rick scott and mitch mcconnell for months in a way where you don't typically see where you have a party chairman whose whole job is to elect republicans and the leader of the party going at it publicly. certainly, mitch mcconnell coming into this very strong, feeling like he is going to have the votes. he said it many times, he said it again yesterday. but it is notable, the fact that he is having a challenge here with rick scott. i think the other point he made is just really important, just this growing kind of effort and frustration with the leadership that's been in place. and the call by many republicans including marco rubio and others to delay this vote. if that's not going to happen. but ju

. >> joining us now the co-founder of punchbowl news anna palmer, she is an msnbc contributor.ccarthy. what will it take? it's been a struggle. what will it take for him to secure those 218 votes he needs to be elected speaker of the house? do you think he's going to get there? >> unclear at this point. he is certainly pushing ahead despite an uphill battle to get that 218 on january 3rd. so far we are reporting this morning that he is telling aides and allies that he's going to force if not one but multiple votes on the house floor on january 3rd which has not happened in over a century, jonathan, so clearly historic. the issue here is that there is a handful plus of republican conservatives who say they are unwilling or unable to vote for him and it's unclear what if anything he can do to actually secure their support. this is what he is going to be focused on for the next 30 plus days. >> so it's going to be a busy stretch. congress is back, senate and house. this lame duck session is going to be particularly -- well, potentially productive. democrats want to get a lot of th
