joining us now, co-founder much punch bowl news anna palmer. she is an msnbc contributor. we're happy when she can join us. good morning, anna. let's start with the day's top story, the classified documents dating from the obama administration that were found in a private office of president biden's before he sought the presidency. let's first see if there is any -- you think there is any legal trouble for this president. and we outline the stark differences between this matter and the mar-a-lago documents case. but a few people i was talking to yesterday after the story broke it muddies the waters. at minimum, it allows the republicans to play a game of what aboutism and it may make the department of justice which of course will make its decisions based on legal merits that the politics surrounding this did just seem to get a little more complicated. >> yeah. i think you're right. the big question is what is in the documents? obviously a very different scenario. the fact that biden's lawyers themselves turned over the documents. but there is this on going investigation and

joining us now co-founder of "punchbowl news," anna palmer. good morning.at to see you this morning. let's start with some of these committee assignments. we just played some sound from speaker mccarthy. is there any newly jit. concern that would warrant his decision to remove lawmakers schiff and swalwell from the intelligence committee or is this, indeed, as the democrats say, political vengeance? >> this shouldn't be a surprise. this is that speaker mccarthy had has been saying was going to happen since democrats took the move to remove marjorie taylor greene and mr. gosar from the committees last congress. you know, i think there has been speculation and a lot of back and forth about some of the issues that republicans see as making both schiff and swalwell as unfit for those -- the intel committee. this is a different committee in the sense that the members are appointed by the speaker. when it comes to ilhan omar, they have to bring that before the house. the house has to vote on it. he has a slim margin for error here, that five-seat majority. that's

david jolly from florida and analyst and anna palmer is co-founder of punch bowl news. and so ryan, you have some new reporting on details of republicans gearing up for intense oversight of the biden administration. what can you tell us? >> it is no secret that there aren't many that believe much of the legislation that comes out of the house of represent tigss over the next two years will ultimately become law because democrats control the senate and of course they control the white house. and so the one thing house republicans have is their oversight responsibility and they plan to use it in many different ways. almost every committee that the house of representatives has about be engaged in some overnight and much directed at the biden administration. as soon as the he had of this month we could see hearings begin on wide range of things, you including the covid virus, the role china is playing on a global stage and a variety of other things. and we're waiting to see exactly how this republican majority uses its subpoena power. for instance, the oversight committee w

let's bring in ali vitali, anna palmer and michael steele are still with us.is the battle that we knew was coming. now we get the sense that it's coming sometime around june which is earlier than most people expected it up here on capitol hill. they thought it was going to be a late summer, early fall funding battle that would have been a one-two punch with the debt ceiling and funding of the government. you're right, this is pointing out money that's already been spent. we have never defaulted on our debt before. it would catastrophic in the words of economists and experts to actually do that. but unlike in the past, the knee jerk response from some key members of the republican conference is not just to raise the debt ceiling and continue paying the bills for things they've already spent money on. it's instead to use it as a bargaining chip. that's not entirely knew for washington, finding points of leverage. but it is a moment where we're going to get to see play out the dynamics of the house republican congress, some of the agreements that kevin mccarthy m
