anna werner reports. >> reporter: this boutique saw a steady stream of customers today. young says they need to make up for the ice storm. >> we had to close about a day and a half and they were two of our biggest days. so they set us back and we've been trying to make the sales figures up. >> reporter: the ice storm made the mall general manager nervous. >> we were a little concerned when we lost the first weekend in december due to snow and ice, but some have recovered and sales are up. >> reporter: she thinks the last minute spike may be due to the holiday schedule this year. >> saturday was our busiest traffic day all year. >> reporter: why do you think your business picked up so much? >> we had fewer days between thanksgiving and christmas, but people still have the same shopping list. >> reporter: many retailers wish they could say the same. overall sales are down nationwide especially in brick and mortar stores. last week, sales were down by 3% compared to last year while online sales jumped 37%. and here is a sign of the season this year. some retailers are so an

here's anna werner. >> reporter: 30-year-old texas resident dustin wright came down with the flu the week before thanksgiving. >> he was achy, feverish and chilled. nothing really more than that. >> reporter: his wife ashley says a few days later the husband and father was struggling to breathe so she rushed them to the emergency room. doctors told her he had the h1n1 strain-- swine flu. on december 5 he died. >> you don't think it would happen to you, you know? we're always worried about my son getting a flu shot. we're never worried about the two of us because you don't hear of anything like this. you don't think it will happen to you. >> reporter: at least five supreme died in texas all from swine flu. health authorities say this year's flu vaccine can prevent swine flu and several other flu strains if people get vaccinated. last year, according to the c.d.c., only 40% of americans got the flu shot. dr. christopher perkins is medical director for dallas county health and human services. so people don't react until they hear the news of people who have died. >> right. and when thin

anna werner is keeping tabs. >> reporter: this coast guard video shows some of the group of 20 whalesy of the whales were heading further out toward open water. but on friday afternoon, they were back in water just 12-14 feet deep. a while close torte coast. which biologists say is not a good sign. 11 whales have died. the carcasses line highland beach on a remote island in the everglades national park. scientists gathered tissue samples to try to determine why the whales beached themselves. >> we are going to want to take ever every organ that you can, skin blubber. teeth. >> reporter: they say the whales appear to not have eaten, but results of tissue analysis won't be available for weeks or months. biologists say the whaelgs seen friday were moving more slowly with less energy. the big worry for rescuers now, that the whales may be too sick or exhausted to return to the open seas that are their home. for "cbs this morning saturday," anna werner everglades national park. >> i hate seeing those whales up on the beach, so sad. >> she mentioned they're sick they're tired, they could be

anna werner is at the galleria mall in dallas. anna? >> reporter: good morning, jeff and vanita. good morning in the west. the stores are open here, the shoppers are beginning to come in, a good thing for retailers because they have this last crucial day of sales before christmas. today is the retail industry's best chance to improve its bottom line. over the weekend, brick and mortar sales were down 10%, hurting overall sales, more online shopping over the past month. there were six fewer shopping days this year because of the late thanksgiving holiday. and the big storm in the east two weeks ago kept would-be shoppers homebound. >> i think this is one of the most competitive christmas seasons and it really is up to retailers to, you know, step up their game and understand what the shoppers want. >> reporter: vice president at retail next analyzes shopping trends. >> people are not afraid to wait to get closer and closer to christmas before they make their purchases. >> reporter: many chains generate 40% of their revenue during the christmas shopping season. spending last year w
