annabelle roberts, nbc news, london. >>> after 42 years of rule under moammar gadhafi, the people of libya say they are finally liberated. people across the country celebrated. but especially in ben ghazi where the uprising first began. the national transitional council announced the formal liberation of libya. misrata has been a bit quiet with concerns about what the next step is for gadhafi's body. the coroner's report found gadhafi did die from a stray bullet wound but the details still remain unclear tonight. >>> and now for national politics, president obama's foreign policy has democrats and republicans battling it out today. nbc's kristen well kker is at t white house with more. >> reporter: making the round on the morning talk shows, secretary of state hillary clinton cast president obama as a leader on foreign policy. >> president obama has passed with flying colors every leadership challenge. >> reporter: and she smacked down republican claims that pulling all u.s. troops out of iraq would leave the country vulnerable to iran. >> iran would be badly miscalculating if they d

nbc's annabel roberts has the latest. >> the earthquake hit in the far eastern province of vann, and the magnitude was about 7.2, which is pretty strong. turkey does have a history of earthquakes and they have engineers who are highly qualified and specialized in designing buildings to resist earthquakes, but is never really sure quite how closely these guidelines are followed. looking at the pictures, you can see there is a high degree of destruction. there are estimates that about 40 or 50 buildings are down in the city of vann and that there are people trapped beneath the rubble. and you can see people digging through that rubble with their bare hands. officials in the area have said there is so much destruction and so many dead. but as yet, it's impossible to put a precise figure on how many have lost their lives. information is still coming in. and it is difficult to get accurate figures, because the communications -- normal channels of communications have been damaged by this quake. the efficient call is for blankets, for tents, and rescue teams to come and help in this effort.

annabel roberts has more. >> reporter: it may be work the rescue work continues. local people joined the overwhelmed emergency crews to dig through the rubble in the hope of finding survivors. and they do. a young woman, grimacing with pain. she is raised on a stretcher, and carried to an ambulance. one life saved is a triumph. but many more lie buried and the challenge ties reach them fast. the nights are cold, temperature falls below freezing. extremely harsh anyone trapped overnight. they dig with bare hands. impossible to give up hope. almost impossible to get through the debris. the quake struck at lunchtime. people ran on to the streets in panic. a series of aftershocks followed, at least 21. the strongest with magnitude of 6. turkey, like, california, japan, is sitting at a what is called a plate boundary. this is an area with multiple faults. very complex pattern. we can already see that some of the aftershocks will probably on different faults than on the main shock. >> in spite of the known risks construction work can be shoddy. officials fear as many as
