welcome to annapolis on booktv. with the help of our comcast cable partners for the next hour we will explore the history aaron literary scene of maryland's capital city. coming up we will learn about the day president lincoln walked through the streets of the south, the reason he was in an apples or passed through annapolis is he was on his way to the peace conference at hampton roads. >> to understand the roots of the area. >> annapolis was eclipsed by baltimore and was desperate. they needed economic security and didn't have it. >> we look and sit-down with rebecca morris to learn about the perot camps of an apple was. >> the largest one was at the naval academy. annapolis is the claim to fame for the civil war, union prisoners of war who had been released on parole by the confederates. in june of 1862 they set up three role camps. one was jefferson barracks in missouri. one was camp jason, ohio and the largest one was originally at the naval academy and men who were paroled would be brought to the exchange point

her book is "annapolis: a history." you can watch it now here on booktv. >> early settlers on 300 and x number of years ago would have landed right here. and we are on a cove called acten cove. and it is, in fact, the very beginning of annapolis. the land fist settled in 1561, and then in the 1660s and '80s original 19 acres of what became annapolis was here. and boats would have come in, good-sized vessels would have come up spa creek which is deep, remarkably deep for its size -- it's not real wide, but it's deep -- and boats would come up, and they could unload supplies, people, whatever. so the early houses tended to be along the ridge that runs down the middle of the peninsula. the name of the book is "annapolis, city on receive remember, a history." annapolis was just desperate. they needed economic security, and they didn't have it. the severn river is a nice liver liver -- river, but it doesn't reach back into the interior. it's pretty shallow, especially at the entrance. there are some points that really restri

the reason that he was and annapolis are passed through annapolis is because he was on his way to the peace conference at hampton roads, the normal route that would have been a beh, but it wasn't available because it wasn't iced over. the chesapeake bay was open so he took a train from washington to annapolis and got on the steamer and went down to the conference at fort monroe and returned the next day. lincoln really had no intention of attending were going to the peace conference at hampton roads. it was only after the telegram from general grant, who expressed regret that there was no american official to meet them. specifically he thought it would be a nice gesture if lincoln would be there with them. so lincoln gets that telegram and about 8:30 on the morning of february 2nd, no intention prior to that of, you know, being involved in the peace conference. he gets the telegraph from grant and decides at that moment to go and buy 11:00 he's on a train to annapolis. his secretary -- nobody knows that he has even left. so it's kind of a wonderful anecdote about john mcerlane who was

as the parole these came into annapolis during 1862 there was no place to put them. every square space was occupied with a tent so they move to the camp 2 miles southwest of annapolis and they thought this would be fined to keep the men out of trouble and we but as it turns out to 2 miles was too far to walk and they also pretty much ravaged the farms in the area in destroyed the crops in broken to the farm houses also even though they were out in the country with all the room to grow favorite in the habit from there was more for the camp and in august of 1863 it was 2 miles outside of annapolis. >> the kids a varied with their conditions including the population. that period also widely because after a large battle maybe 10,000 paroled men after an exchange you could have a couple thousand so when there were very few people you had enough of everything but they're usually not enough notice was given to the camp where the prisoners are flooding in and then they receive been outdoors not having enough food or supplies. the problems of the parole camp they had access t

david collins joins us from annapolis for more on what happened.they took steady aim and brought in some heavy artillery in the form of public support, however they missed their target. to adopt the voted regulations without making any changes. these pro-nited, second amendment advocates found something in maryland's sweeping gun-control law. notr watch dog groups did even bother to look into regulations that would help lease regulate the law. >> the regulations are not supposed to be overly broad or inclusive. these are clearly overly broad and they include things we specifically excluded. >> there are mistakes. i've got a notebook this the with questions. >> they are so convoluted i can get together with five different gun dealers and they all have a different opinion of what it means. >> gun rights activists question what it means. finding a shooting range will be difficult in areas like baltimore city. >> it should not be mandatory because not everybody intends to carry their firearms. if you're just using them for recreational or possess, you

. >> annapolis st.john's college is not to be the first in maryland to be racially degraded with the admission of martin dyer in 1848 and francis scott key, author of the star-spangled banner was a student. petitti visited annapolis with the local partner colchester brigade area's cultural and literary history. >> and the william p. block book realm, the rare book room contains about 2800 volumes. the room is named after to help us renovate in the library itself is the record study for the state of maryland. all the books in this room are donated to the college. many early books in the first collection they were to be a resource for young people who were interested in the ministry. so this is a collection for the general public. the commissary of maryland and was brought to this country largely collections for the library collections. what we have here is the first collection given to the public library for the purpose, both of paris used and for the reading public. i think because he really wanted the

and you may soon have a new way to commute between annapolis and the district.transit administration considering adding a new stop at the new carrollton metro station on two bus routes from annapolis. the 922 and 950 buses could soon add that stop. maryland cut a previous bus route between new carrollton and annapolis because of budget cuts and low ridership but increasing development around new carrollton has them rethinking that route. >>> today may be your last day to visit the national aquarium. after 81 years it will be closing its doors in the basement of the commerce building in northwest washington for good tomorrow. renovations to the building are forcing the aquarium out. owners are looking for a new location. the staff is planning to move the animals to the national aquarium in baltimore. it is now 6:50. covering northern virginia this morning, sleep might be a major motivator for some fairfax county high schoolers. the county started its opt out program with seniors allowing them to drop their first period class to get the more sleep. so far about 5%

in annapolis, john rydell, fox45 news at 5:30." maryland's strict new gun laws hit the books in a little more than a week... prompting several people to shop for guns in the final days. at the state fairgrounds ... a gun show originally scheduled for next month.... got moved up.... to this past weekend.... so it would take place before maryland's new gun laws take effect october 1st. they say they had plenty of customers.... trying to purchase guns that will soon be banned. on that list are 45 assault weapons... and magazines will be limited to 10 rounds. "we want to be able to protect ourselves with a handgun essentially and we know that if we don't do that before tomorrow than it's going to be a giant process." the firearms safety act also requires fingerprinting for gun buyers.... and a handgun qualification license. in a little more than a year, maryland will vote for its next governor. today the three democratic candidates came out swinging... doing their best to persuade members of the maryland state and washington d-c buildi

it brought lawmakers to annapolis today. the joint committee of administrative executive review hard arguments from both sides. nancy jacobs is one of the leading opponent. >> there are a lot of things up to question, a lot of ambiguous parts of the regulation. >> reporter: others feel the new laws are needed. >> the law will keep people from buying guns for criminals. it will deter the activity that gets guns in the wrong hands. >> reporter: it's in opposition to the new law and how the state police willen force them. >> this will not make a bit of difference to the criminals who are not going to pay lay tension to the plawms anyway. it's only lay facting law abiding citizens who have the right to shoot to bear arms and it's a constant barrage on people that want to stay within the law and it's making this tougher and tougher for people to do. >> reporter: after more than three hours of testimony, the committee approved the new regulation by a vote of 9-6. that moons things will go into effect unchanged on october 1st. anna

maryland lawmakers did not make any changes to the upcoming new gun law while meeting in annapolis yesterday. gun rights supporters showed up for one last chance to protest the new law. lawmakers debated whether to keep a provision requiring buyers of new handguns to complete a "live" firearm training course. (governor) "there's too much violence in this world, too many people losing their lives to gun violence and we need to do a much better job as a peopleto keep guns out of the hands of violent criminals or dangerous individuals." the new gun law officially takes effect october first. the man accused in the navy yard shooting lied when applying for security clearance. according to cnn, government background checkers knew this... but did not tell the navy. when aaron alexis enlisted in 2007, he answered "no" to questions about whether he was ever arrested. that was a lie... three years earlier he was arrested and charged for shooting out tires on a construction worker's vehicle... he called that incident an anger-fueled blackout. the report given to the navy simply stated alexis deflated t
