anne makovec is in orinda and joins us by phone where, ann, main street i understand in the downtown area is closed? >> two blocks of moraga way closed down right in downtown orinda and you can smell gas authorities of downtown. i'm at the bart station up the hill the smell of natural gas is in the air but fire officials have assured us that safety is not an issue. two blocks are affected, between camino pablo and brookwood. it was a 2" gas line broken around 11:30 last night as independent contractors working for the city hit the line with a backhoe. those contractors left their truck there and bolted out of the area apparently which cause some difficulty for pg&e trying to get to the area to fix the leak initially. those contractors were digging as part of a project to expand pedestrian walkways downtown. now, the situation is less dangerous than official first thought. at around midnight they thought it was a 6" pipe that was broken and started evacuating homes a little more than a dozen homes. then they realized that it was only a 2" pipe and that evacuations of homes were unnece

anne what can you tell us? pg&e is obviously focusing a lot of its work here in the san bruno neighborhood where the explosion happened. but a state public utility commission is now ordering them to check thousands of miles of pipeline across the state to make sure other neighborhoods don't end up in this same situation. the piece of pipeline, the piece that you see right there is now on its way to washington, d.c. a 28-foot section called prime evidence in the gas line explosion investigation. it was ripped out of the ground and tossed 100 feet through the air by thursday's blast. investigators are now trying to figure out whether the explosion was caused by a weld failure, impact from construction, or metal fatigue. the ntsb is digging to find out. >> there are lots of reasons why this pipe could have failed and getting into the crater will help us gather information to make that determination. >> reporter: now, the california public utilities commission did order pg&e to inspect its natural gas system as a w

anne makovec is already there in walnut creek. it is not so hot right now, what is it like, anne. >> reporter: that's right, it is just below 60 degrees right now. it's especially pleasant to be the morning reporter because everybody working the later shift are going to be roasting. according to your forecast it will be 102 here in walnut creek today a difference of about 40 degrees from what it is right now. that heat wave will present two issues. it's a "spare the air." number 2, the possibility of power outages. so many people are running their air-conditioning, it can lead to system overload and that's what happened in castro valley this weekend. more than 30,000 pg&e customers lost power for almost three hours on saturday night. pg&e says it was heat-related equipment failure. of course, the mere thought of not having air-conditioning can make those sweat beads form so here are a few ways that you can still have the ac but make things easier on the power grid. these are from pg&e. shut your windows and keep your blinds closed

that is the latest from anne arundel county. lowell melser, wbal-tv 11 news. >> double-team insta-weather- plus with tony pann and sandra shaw. >> well, they got have that right. i am john collins. we's look at the situation have right now. the yellow and red areas are the areas of most intense rain. we are seeing less of this than we had earlier. believe me, there's still a lot more out there. the map is so busy that it is hard to find baltimore i kind of put this yellow circle right about where the baltimore beltway is. the heaviest rain at the moment is in western harford county, the southern half of the city, down into northern anne arundel county, and a little slug or rain here as well. i want to take the radar of the picture and -- off the picture and add satellite imagery. we are all cloudy. let me pull the view out of it. surprisingly, down are not ocean city, they had a few breaks and the clouds -- down around ocean city, they had a few bricks and the clouds with the sun came through. baltimore is in the middle of this.

and our anne makovec is in concord where officers say the man flashed a gun at them. anne?porter: yes. i'm standing at the intersection where this all began about 4 hours, clayton and ashbury, here in concord. you can see ashbury is still closed down. the actual shooting scene was at least a block away. but police have the whole area on lockdown. it's a residential area flanked by several businesses here in concord. police apparently recognized the man at around 2:30 walking down the street. they wanted him on robbery warrants and they told him to stop and he started running away. officers started chasing him down ashbury in their vehicle. he got halfway down ashbury when police say he pulled out a handgun. they can't say, though, whether or not he pointed that handgun at them. the officers got out of the car. he was shot and wounded and taken to john muir hospital with undisclosed injuries. at this point a police spokesman says he doesn't know if this man is even the robbery suspect they were looking for. >>> i think we are trying to get a handle on how somebody walking do

anne makovec is in vallejo to sort it all out. ann. >> reporter: very confusing story.t we know right now. two bodies, the bodies two of women, were found inside this home on upland court here in vallejo overnight. mutilated, according to police. police have not confirmed yet if they are indeed two missing women in their 60s. one of those women lived here and both acquaintances of a man suspected of two other murders. here's that man, efren valdemoro, 38 years old, shot and killed by officers last night after leading them on a high-speed chase in richmond. he was killed in a store and his girlfriend was found dead in a car. valdemoro is also cluesed of beating to death 73-year-old richard sales last week inside this home in hercules. still missing this morning, salmonella's son frederick last seen inside the hercules home. he remains missing and here are the two women missing since last week. the accused murderer who is dead has person ties to them. rita allen and carol smart and they have been missing since last wednesday. valdemoro may have rented a home in the house.

this includes extreme western caroline county, talbot county, kent county and queen anne's county. places near skipton in the next five to 10 minutes, grasonville and heading to star, centreville by 9:45. essentially what we're looking at is cop doppler radar indicate rotation in that cluster. it's before the r and e in baltimore. that is actually on the eastern shore and east and north of the bay bridge. looks like this rotating cell not necessarily producing anything right now, touching the ground but when anything is twisting up there in the air and we can indicate this, check our doppler, this is called a velocity scan. what i'm highlighting here, are the winds, the winds heading towards the radar site over in dover. in the green and away in the red. what we're watching here is when you get the colors close together, the green and red indicates there may be something rotating there. it looks like between easton and grasonville now as we continue to watch this particular cell pass off towards the north and east. if you're in that particular area, west of central caroline county,

anne, good morning. >>> reporter: good morning. the big question that remains here in vallejo this morning is who killed the two women who were found dead in that home on upland court. a lot of fingers point toward efren valdemoro, who is already thought to have killed at least two other people before he was shot by police on tuesday. plus, he spent time living in the house where the bodies were found and was known to have loud arguments with one of the women, rita allen, who also lived in that same house. she and her friend carol smart were found dead there on tuesday. but police have not ruled out allen's husband, who lived in the house as well, and apparently lived there for several days with the decomposing bodies. one in a bedroom, the other in a shallow grave in the backyard. his name is charles rittenhouse, 72 years old. he told police his wife was missing on sunday, two days after she was last seen. police then followed up at their home and found those bodies. >> when he was confronted with the fact that bodies were located

let's go to anne makovec. she's in san jose, where that officer is accused of falsely arresting a teenaged boy. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. three people in hot water this morning. two teenagers for allegedly having underaged sex, and this officer accused of making a false arrest. he is on administrative leave right now. the officer is the father of the teenaged girl. she is 14 and reportedly had consensual sex with her 15-year- old boyfriend so the officer- father allegedly rode his motorcycle to the boy's house last month in full uniform to call him out. that's where the story splits. the boy's parents told the "mercury news" that the cop put handcuffs on the boy and the cop's lawyer says he just lectured him. the boy's parents then decided to report the incident to the san jose police wondering if that was maybe an abuse of power. that led to their son actually being cited for the sex and the cop's daughter was also cited, according to the "mercury news." and i'm here live now with steve c
