i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the continuing threat of severe storms along the eastern seaboard and gulf coast. a powerful weather system made its way across the southeast monday, dumping heavy rains, causing flash flooding and spawning at least one damaging tornado. >> reporter: the twister touched down in eastern north carolina monday evening. the winds were so strong, it lifted up a pickup truck, dumping it 40 yards from the highway. the driver and son were injured, but the man's brother-in-law says it's a miracle their injuries weren't more serious. >> you see a man to the hospital, walking away, got in the rescue squad, thanking god, crying and stuff. and me and myself, we cried all the way here. >> reporter: the tornado continued its damage, flattening eight homes and injuring at least three other people. >> it just was a big, dark, black cloud up top. and as it reached the ground, it changed to a little bit of a white color. like i said, the most impressive thing was everything that was going

i'm anne-marie green. we've learned this morning that the soldier accused of opening fire at ft. hood, texas, last night, was being treated for mental illness. the soldier arrived at ft. hood in february. he allegedly shot and killed three people and wounded 16 others before taking his own life. all the victims were members of the military. the shooting does not appear to be related to terrorism. officials say he was confronted in the parking lot by military police. a basewide lockdown has been lifted and the base commander says his troops and their families will move forward. >> we know the soldiers and the civilians and the families of this fort who served so bravely in combat for the last 13 years in both iraq and afghanistan are strong, and we will get through this. >> officials described the female m.p. who confronted the gunman as a hero. this morning they are trying to find out what triggered the attack. omar villafranca has our report. >> reporter: ft. hood was on lockdown after gunfire rang out we

anne makovec tracking the latest now in our newsroom. the suspect was an iraq war veteran who was being treated for mental health issues. >> reporter: he had been treated for anxiety and depression. he was actually on medication and he was under evaluation for possible post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in combat in iraq. helicopters brought some of the victims to a hospital in temple, texas. at the time their prognosis was not good. >> all these patients are in our icu or will be there very shortly. three are in critical condition and the remaining are all seriously injured. >> reporter: first responders streamed toward fort hood where for the second time in less than five years, an army soldier has gone on a shooting spree. the military has identified him as specialist ivan lopez. >> it is believed he walked into one of the unit buildings, opened fire, got into a vehicle, fired from a vehicle, got out of the vehicle, walked into another building, and opened fire again and then was engaged by local law enforcement here at fort

anne, thank you. >> live tv first. nice stuff. >>> developing news out of marin county where another woman has been found dead on top of mount tamalpais. it was found near the mountain home inn parking lot where authorities found the body of a woman missing yesterday. more now from sharon chin. >>> reporter: it took searchers about an hour to find the body of a woman that authorities say appears to match the description and clothes of missing 50-year-old marie sanner of mill valley. >> there is no obvious sign of the cause of death. >> reporter: marie is an avid hiker. he wanted to go home and she wanted to keep hiking. deputies say only the dog made it back to the car. her father reported her missing. a body was found in a drainage ditch off trail. >> she may have possibly fallen 40 or 50 feet down into the drainage which sadly is covered with large rocks and boulders. >> reporter: deputies say the woman's body was found less than a mile from where searchers recovered a menlo park woman's body last weekend. both found

i'm anne makovec live in marin county.et's check with elizabeth wenger for more on your friday morning commute. elizabeth, is rain affecting anybody out there? >> reporter: yeah. we have seen more spinouts than usual. i actually just checked with chp and they say there's more than a dozen different incidents and you can see why. the roads are definitely slick this morning. if you are heading toward the bay bridge toll plaza, be careful on the on- and off- ramps. reduce your speeds as anne mentioned some parts of the bay area not as much rain falling. so we are seeing our incident count fall in the last 15 minutes. but this is just a few -- a little sampling in the south bay of some of the different either accidents, spinouts or even stalls around the south bay. and we just lost our camera but there was an approach northbound 880 to 101 where we could see the roads were wet even some flooding reports in our usual spot in marin county approaching lucky drive. that's the latest from here in the "kcbs traffic" center. back to

kpix 5 reporter anne makovec has details now from the sunnydale neighborhood here in san francisco. >> reporter: castillo street has been reopened. the home is still standing here behind me. but there was certainly a lot of damage done inside. investigators still trying to figure out what started this fire but one person was killed six others injured. this was the scene yesterday right after the fire. that is the window from which a man jumped for his life. fire also killed an 84-year-old woman. it broke out just after 5 p.m. and moved quickly through one building and into another. >> we have heavy smoke and fire showing from the top floor and also the rear of the building. >> none of us couldn't go to the top floor, too much smoke and fire. >> reporter: the six people injured are all family members ages 30s to 60s. and at last word of the six people who were injured, two were still in critical condition. live in san francisco, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> san francisco arson investigators still trying to find out the cause of the explosion and that fire. >>> at least 6 people are dead fr

len. >> reporter: well, i'm here in the ann darling neighborhood in fact the ann darling parking lot here in san jose. and if you look around, it doesn't look polluted. it doesn't look bad at all but the state epa says there are many hidden factors that contribute to make this one of the worst offenders. the neighborhood around 33rd and mckee in san jose has neat homes, lively supermarkets and ann darling elementary school. but it's also a place with heavy industry nearby and heavy traffic on the street and adjacent highway 101 freeway which is usually gridlocked. the factors add up to make this one of the most polluted spots in the bay area and the state. >> most of the time it seems pretty clear. so we never really pay attention. >> reporter: california epa data shows many of the most affected neighborhoods are in low income areas of the central valley and los angeles. they include places with air, ground and water pollution problems. the worst areas appear in red on these maps. the darker the red, the greater the problem. >> it's all traffic, hazardous waste. >> reporter: the doct

anne makovec with the very latest in our newsroom. this is the second mass shooting at this base in five years. >> reporter: yes. 20 people were dead or injured. the shooter in this case had been treated for depression and anxiety and was under evaluation for post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in combat in iraq. >> we do know that this soldier had behavior, mental health issues and was being treated for that. >> we have an active shooter or fort hood. >> reporter: the texas army post was thrown into lockdown wednesday afternoon after the military says lopez opened fire in two buildings and from a vehicle with a semi-automatic pistol he is recently purchased. the injured were rushed to local hospitals. >> they have had a variety of injuries that we have been treating ranging from gunshot wounds that involved extremities, abdomen, chest and neck. >> reporter: yesterday's shooting is bringing back painful memories of a similar incident in 2009 when army psychiatrist nidal hasan killed 13 people at the post. some are questioning
