the press conference will get under way here at the anne arundel fire department. we have been able to gather information. this appears to have been an electrical fire that eventually caught the christmas tree on fire. there was a problem with an outlet around the christmas tree. some combustibles ignited including the tree. i'm told this fire went up very, very quickly, described as umtltra fast. there was no way that anyone could get out of this house alive. the tree was 15 feet high and it was very, very dry. we're told a lot of needles were found underneath as well as in the area that collects needles underneath the tree. it provided a big fuel load for this fire to spread. we're told that don pile's body was actually found in the great greatroom area. it was normal for him to sleep on the first floor. his wife sandy and the grandchildren were on the second floor of the home. it appears they all did die from smoke inhalation. again, we're continuing to gather new information. a press conference is scheduled any moment now including the anne arundel fire chief a

cars leaving anne arundel county heading into washington. now realizing that they cannot head and travel on route 50 west. that's where we are live. route 50 west and 97 north. all these cars are heading to 97 north. 50 west shut down because of the deadly crash that happened about a mile down the road. we have a chopper flying overhead to give you a better perspective of what it all looks like. right now we can tell you the medical examiner is on the scene and tow trucks for the last half-hour or so have arrived on the seep as well. maryland -- scene as well. maryland police are telling us there was a single-car crash. it appeared from what i saw that an suv was in the fast lane and hit the jersey barrier. the driver of that single-car crash stepped out of the car to investigate and unfortunately that driver was stuck and killed by a second car that was traveling down route 50. that second car, the driver of that second car did stay on the scene. police trying to figure out if road conditions played a factor. we know it's bitterly cold this

everything is fairly light and pushing to the northeast so anne arundel county, northern calvert, the city of washington and montgomery county haven't seen much yet. it will slowly increase but the heavier precipitation will come in later tonight and overnight. 37 in gaithersburg and 38 at quantico. 41 at reagan national. everything is melting but the roads are just wet. more precipitation still to come from this yet developing storm center located on the northeast florida coast. it will make a move across land and eventually merge somewhere in there over tomorrow morning, late tomorrow morning hours. and as it comes along, there will be areas of precipitation. heavier sometimes and lighter than others. one thing we always watch in these storms are any sort of concentrated bands of thunderstorms or convection or heavy downpours that sometimes can rob the energy from moving northward. as i said this is a fluid situation. we've seen that the threat is clearly confined north and west the heavier amounts but with temperatures so borderline we're not ready to really call this one yet. exce

we are now confirming with the anne arundel fire department this afternoon that they did recover two bodies inside the debris of that burned-out mansion, and their work is not over. they're continuing to search for additional victims. now, there are a total of six people missing from that mansion that went up in flames early monday morning. that fire was reported 3:30 a.m. don pile and his wife sandy were believed to be in that house with their four young grandchildren. atf investigators were able to go into the debris for the first time today to begin looking for victims, and it seemed like it happened pretty quickly. they were instructed by relatives about where to look in the house, where the victims may have been sleechping at that hour. let's hear more about how the discovery was made. >> they searched with a cadaver canine resulted in positive alerts. as we started to process the scene, we located the bodies of two individuals. the office of the chief medical examiner for the state of maryland took possession of the bodies and transported them to baltimore for autopsy and ident
