anne makovec following some fires up in the north bay. but we begin with cate caugiran in the east bay. cate. >> reporter: frank, as you wake up this morning, in the east bay you can expect to see some damage like this over here. this is a tree that's been toppled over on to skyline boulevard in oakland. it's not the only one. strong winds have made a mess not to mention started a few fires in this area early this morning. in oakland, the winds were so strong, it knocked this tree on power lines creating sparks that ignited a small fire and firefighters had a tough time getting through the damage because of those gusty winds. pg&e crews had their work could you tell out for them trying to clear up the damage -- had their work cut out for them trying to clear up the damage. it took oakland firefighters 20 minutes to knock it down and small grassfires like this one stir up haunting memories for those who lived in the area in 1991. that's when the infamous oakland hills fire ripped through 1500 acres killing 25 people and injuring 150 others. the conditions then very similar to what we're going to be seeing today.

frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 5:29. a horrific scene on the peninsula. a driver is accused of plowing into two people in a drunk driving collision. anneter: they were killed almost instantly, according to police. you can see some of the damage left behind here when the suspected drunk driver crashed her car here into that tree, and that's where it finally came to a rest. here's a look at the scene from last night. the man and woman, in their 50s, they were killed, hit by a suspected drunk driver. the victims' names have not been released. but the driver's name has. 54-year-old marjorie reitzell from redwood city facing two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. >> the two people were walking their dog. the suspect vehicle came up behind them eastbound, struck them both, launching them into the air and killing them instantly. the dog was also hit, injured, but not killed. the dog has been taken to a vet by the peninsula humane society. >> reporter: after hitting the couple, the suspect car crossed the center divide and sideswiped a car, and hit a tree. she was taken to the hospital, but soon she'll be taken to jail.
