kpix5 anne mackovec joining us with it's blocked off. >>reporter: you can't turn onto sunnyvale from el camino real. we're waiting to find out the condition of the 8 people hit by this rogue car that went off the roadway onto a sidewalk in andea to plow into them. according to witnesses, this happened before 7:00 last night. here's some of the video from the scene last night as some of those people were attended to, and police were able to arrest the driver after he crashed his car nearby. so they are interviewing him right now as the 8 people who were hit were sent to the hospital, and police are saying that could have been an intentional act. witnesses say it didn't look like this person tried to hit the brakes before he plowed into this crowd so we are expecting to hear a lot more later on this morning. and this lane hereof el camino is going to be shutdown until around 8:00 a.m. live in sunnyvale, anne mackovec, kpix5. >>> the first fight against an opioid epidemic. reporter john lawrence on the historic move. >>reporter: a historic

anne mackovec joins us from the scene with the latest.>reporter: police say they believe this may have been deliberate according to several witness accounts of this crash. traffic is moving through this intersection again after this happened at about 6:40 last night. that is when a black toyota corolla plowed through a crosswalk here on el camino. drove up on the sidewalk where he continued to hit people. and then crashed into a tree. in all, 8 people were injured. some of them with critical injuries and the youngest person who was hit, 13-year-old. this intersection is surrounded by several busy shopping centers so there were a lot of witnesses who told police there were no signs the driver tried to slowdown or avoid the crash at all. >> it looks like this may have been an intentional act by the driver based upon what's on scene and statements obtained. we are conducting that investigation. we don't know what the motives were, so that's all being apart of the investigation at this time. >> police took the driver into custody. he does not
