anne makovec reports. >> reporter: good morning.ate last night, they got a crane here outside of the extended stay hotel in san rafael and they brought a metal plate up to the man's window. it's a five by eight metal plate being held by a crane which would block any gunshots he might fire towards 580. that's how they re-opened the highway. the standoff continues. back to when this began, standoff at around 11 a.m. yesterday. police have been trying to arrest the man they believe stabbed a clerk at united supermarket in san rafael on sunday. when they moved in on the hotel, the man fired a shot from a window. the hotel overlooks interstate 580. he then locked himself in the room with his girlfriend beginning the standoff and so they closed down the highway. police are now considering that girlfriend a hostage this morning. here's a picture of the unidentified suspect from the supermarket surveillance footage. police haven't given any information on their negotiations with this guy except to say they have been steady since this began
