anne makovec is in santa rosa this morning with more. >> reporter: if these employees' stories is true that means that two armed robbers are on the loose this morning. you can see these armored cars behind me none of them were taken but some money was according to these employees. they say the robbers locked them inside the warehouse behind a steel door last night taking off with cash. we don't know how much cash. one of the employees had a phone and called 911 and police arrived just after 10:30 last night. >> we arrived. we had to free the employees because the doors were locked, secured, and once we freed the employees, we found that they were unharmed and we have our detective crew out here right now in the preliminary stages of investigation. >> reporter: and they do have a lot of holes to fill in on this story. the suspects were armed according to police. we don't know with what. and police have not released any description of the suspects yet. but we do know there is a $2,500 reward being offered now for any information leading to an arrest of the suspects in this case. frank? >

anne makovec in san francisco where the losses were in the millions, right, anne. >> reporter: that's right. about 1.5 million according to the fbi. this is a big scandal at the giants front office. she is now facing federal felony charges and is out on $500,000 bond. robin o'connor worked in the payroll department for the giants in charge of making changes to other employees' direct deposits but the fbi thinks she has been depositing some of their money into her account since last year. some red flags went up last month when she applied for a home loan according to a federal affidavit. in that loan application, she attached a letter supposedly from giants human resource department explaining a couple of mysterious extra payments she had received because she, quote, assisted us in accomplishing our goal of winning the 2010 world series. the bank called the giants and she knitted embezzling $600,000. when they went through the records, the fbi said it was more like $1.5 million. the giants released a statement yesterday saying, "we're working with the federal authorities to ensure this

anne makovec is in oakland with a warning about a brazen crime spree out there. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. a robber or robbers are ripping necklaces off people if they think they are made of gold. this has been increasing. so oakland police are doing extra patrols here at the fruitvale bart stations and other areas around the city trying to get warning out to people before they become a victim. this crime can be lucrative for the robbers with the price of gold at an all-time high over $1,800 an ounce. the necklaces range in value many worth hundreds of dollars. the robberies have been reported all over the city but mainly into the fruitvale and lake merritt areas. the majority of victims are women targeted by men during commute hours in the early evening. simply snatching the necklace off the person and taking off. also it's been going on in the early evening. police have seen up to four in a single day. the best advice from state police to try to hide your gold, wear your jewelry under your clothing until you get to your destination. there is

anne makovec in oakland where the search for suspects continues. she joins us with more. anne, good morning. >>> reporter: they have one person of interest in custody right now but no official murder charges have been filed. so police aren't saying a lot but they are either building a case against that person or the shoot core still be on the loose. 3-year-old carlos fernandez nava was caught in the crossfire of what appears to be a gang shooting on international boulevard on monday afternoon. police sources say the intended targets of that shooting were affiliated with the housing project next door, lockwood gardens, which has been in a sort of turf war with people at another complex four blocks away, the lion creek apartments. officially police aren't saying much. >> can't say that we have key pieces of evidence in this case. >> reporter: might that be a gun? >> we have key pieces of evidence in the case. >> reporter: police don't want to answer questions. they do say they are still looking for other people connected with the shooting, including the possible shooter in t

anne makovec is in menlo park now at the usgs headquarters to talk about that quake and did you feel it, anne? >> reporter: i did not feel it. i was fast asleep. but i find it funny because a lot of people here on west coast were mocking people on east coast because they thought it wasch is a big deal that they had an earthquake -- because it was such a big deal that they had an earthquake. we have one here that's smaller, and all of a sudden facebook and twitter are blowing up about that. clearly we're interested in our own earthquakes and the scientists here have plenty to study. this is the seismograph from last night. it was a 3.6 magnitude felt all over the bay area. it hit at 11:36 p.m. about 3 miles from san leandro. according to the u.s. geological survey it had a depth between five to nine miles and then there was an aftershock, 2.3 magnitude, about 5 minutes later. this one was obviously significantly smaller than the earthquake in virginia yesterday. it was a 5.8. the strongest quake to hit that region in decades. according to scientists here, there's a couple of difference

anne makovec is in oakland to explain. good morning. >> reporter: some call it radical, frank. but when you're talking about gang injunctions, those have been in place here in oakland, though they have caused quite a legal controversy. the other option is curfews which are in place in many cities. bottom line is that murders here in oakland have been up about 50% this year including the murder of carlos nava. this is the site of that killing on august 8. that has outraged people here prompting folks to grasp at solutions to stop the violence in oakland. council president larry reid and councilman ignacio de la fuente are pushing for a citywide curfew and for the city to enforce and expand current gang injunctions from fruitvale to east and west oakland. now, those are civil court orders similar to restraining orders. mayor jean quan calls the move nothing more than political grandstanding. but de la fuente asks, what's the alternative? >> i think we have to make her account afternoon. i think that if you don't support gang injunction, then what are you doing? what is the plan?

anne makovec joins us from santa rosa with the very latest.d morning. >> reporter: if these workers' stories hold water there are two armed robbery suspects at least two armed robbery suspects on the loose this morning. a look at the scene in santa rosa last night just after 10:30. two employees of the company say they were locked inside the warehouse. this is a secure warehouse with a steel door, by two armed robbers. police haven't said what they made off with, an undisclosed amount of cash, after this robbery attempt. police just got this 911 call late last night from these two men who were locked inside the secure area of the garda company warehouse on north point road. the men locked inside said the suspects may have been armed and they are not saying what they were armed with. and police have not released any details, any description of these suspects yet this morning. they are still trying to figure out the story of the men who were locked inside here. but as far as we know, these two armed robbery suspects on the loose this morning. yo

anne makovec reports on the unusual way drivers are being kept safe during the morning commute. >> reporter: good morning. the standoff continues here at the extended stay hotel in san rafael here behind me. and for the first time this morning, we did see some movement in the area. you can see there's a fire truck here behind me. we did see a couple of guys in camo walking down that ladder from the roof of the building next door. so we are not exactly sure what that indicates right now. now, you mentioned 580 was reaped and that is because police were able to install a metal plate outside the window of this manholed up in the hotel room. they were concerned because he fired one shot out the window so they closed the highway. they have a freezing rain in front. hotel -- they have a crane in front of the hotel holding up a metal plate to protected the public from bullets that may come from inside. let's take you back to when this all started late yesterday morning when police were trying to arrest this man because they believe he stabbed a clerk at united supermarket in san rafael on sunday.

anne makovec is in san rafael with more. >> reporter: police say they have been continuing to negotiate with this man on the phone. he is still holed up in his room here at the hotel behind me and about 70 officers are rotating with about 70 on scene at any given time and they have been for more than the past 24 hours. 580 was re-opened overnight after they installed a safety measure an 8 by 10 metal plate suspended by a crane blocking the window of the room where the man is holding his girlfriend as hostage. if he decides to fire a shot at the highway it won't go far. the standoff has been going on since 11 a.m. yesterday. no telling how long it will go on. >> our ultimate goal is public safety for the people in the room as well as out here. we are going to respond appropriately, take our time and aand do this the best way possible. >> reporter: the standoff began yesterday when police got a tip that a stabbing suspect was in the extended stay hotel in san rafael. police say he locked himself in, reported his girlfriend was there, too, and fired a shot out of the window toward i-580. t

anne makovec is in oakland where police are trying to find the shooters. good morning. >>> reporter: they have arrested two people and police believe they will arrest a third person who they believe is the shooter in the next 24 hours. little carlos fernandez nava was shot monday afternoon on international boulevard in east oakland. hundreds gathered last night at a vigil at the scene of the shooting where little carlos was caught in the crossfire of what police believe is a gang shooting. two people were arrested this week after police served warns all over the east bay, hayward, alameda and pittsburg but inside sources say the shooter is on the loose. they say they know he has gang ties that claim the street near the crime scene. he attended skyline high school and allegedly moved away to the desert southwest and then returned to oakland just before the shooting. they say he has a rap sheet including gun charges. they say this morning they are hot on his trail. coming up here in the next half hour we'll hear from one of the witnesses to this shooting tha

anne makovec is in oakland, where police are still looking for suspects. >>> reporter: we know they have one person of interest in custody right now but no official murder charges have been filed in that case. so police are either continuing to build a case against that person or the shooter could still be on the loose. 3-year-old carlos fernandez nava was caught in the crossfire of what appears to be a gang shooting on international boulevard on monday afternoon. police sources say the intended targets of that shooting were affiliated with a housing project next door lockwood gardens which has been in a turf war with people at another complex four blocks away, the lion creek apartments. sources say that is the group with which two people detained for questioning are affiliated but officially, police aren't saying much. >> we do have a person of interest in custody. the investigators are working very diligently to connect the dots in this case and to connect him and find out exactly what his role was in the killing of this little boy. >> reporter: are you still looking for other individu

anne makovec is in richmond where a woman was gunned down.ood morning, anne. >> reporter: two people shot, a family was woken up by gunfire at 4 a.m. here in richmond. this is the dead end behind me moran avenue and it's the last house there on the side of the street that's closest to that police car, one woman is killed, one man in the hospital with serious injuries. this was a home invasion. at least one man came in through the back of the house at around 4 a.m. and started shooting soon after. in the home, we had parents, two children and grandmother. a neighbor that we spoke to who knows the family well says they are from fiji. he also had this interesting tidbit that the mother and the grandmother of that family were actually robbed at gunpoint one week ago a few blocks from here out on the street. otherwise, it is a quiet neighborhood. according to both police officers and that neighbor. now, they do have two people that they are talking to right now. they are calling them persons of interest. one of them was seen running away from the

i'm anne makovec. ann notarangelo has the night off.reaking news on that state wide amber alert for a 2-year- old sacramento girl. police have found the car belonging to the father and the fbi confirms to cbs5 the bodies of the man and his young daughter are inside. he is suspected of killing madeline fay last weekend after losing joint custody. but today that car was found near the remote town of somerset east of sacramento. it is a crime scene and amber alert messages on freeway signs you may have been seeing over the past few days across the state. those signs were deactivated in the past hour. >>> at least four people are dead tonight after a stage collapsed during a storm at the indiana state fair. cameras were recording this footage as the drama unfolds. you can see people starting to leave as the strong winds kick up and then suddenly there the stage's massive structure comes crashing down. at least two dozen people were injured. many tracked in the crumbling structure. sugarland was about to take the stage and that's when weathe

anne makovec explains how the whole incident took less than a minute. >> reporter: this surveillance video shows how thieves got know and out of the bingo hall within a minute. first you can see them looking to see if anyone is inside, then they ram a pickup through the front wall, back up, and ram it again into the atm machine which appears to be their target. >> they just picked it up, threw it in the back and they were gone. in and out in 60 seconds. >> reporter: the hall director says it was well planned. >> they had to know that atm was right next to the door. they could have played beginning go bingo here. i don't know. >> reporter: over here is where the atm was knocked off its bolts. today the glass is being swept and the costs are being counted. the estimates, the broken entryway is worth $8,000, the atm another $8,000. and a machine next to it was damagedas well, all for the thieves to get an estimated $5,000 to $6,000 out of the atm. >> they probably find a way to get it out but it will take sledge hammers, welding torches, i don't know what. >> the hall will have to figur

anne makovec with how the employees escaped. >> reporter: if the employee's story is true that means at least two armed robbers are on the loose this afternoon. you can see the armored vehicles behind me. none were stolen but employees say some cash was. they say the robbers locked them inside this warehouse behind a steel door last night taking off with some cash. we don't know how much. one of the employees had a phone and called 911 and place arrived just before 11 p.m. >> we arrived. we had to free the employees. we freed them and they were unharmed. >> reporter: they say they believe the suspects had guns. there is no description of the robbers. there is a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. no comment in garda this afternoon. >>> an hour ago at oakland international airport a bomb squad checked a suspicious package. it was harmless in terminal one next to an x-ray. it was a water bottle and a mattress pump inside. airport officials say there were no evacuations and no delays. >>> the power is back for at least some walnut creek residen

anne makovec reports. >> reporter: good morning.ate last night, they got a crane here outside of the extended stay hotel in san rafael and they brought a metal plate up to the man's window. it's a five by eight metal plate being held by a crane which would block any gunshots he might fire towards 580. that's how they re-opened the highway. the standoff continues. back to when this began, standoff at around 11 a.m. yesterday. police have been trying to arrest the man they believe stabbed a clerk at united supermarket in san rafael on sunday. when they moved in on the hotel, the man fired a shot from a window. the hotel overlooks interstate 580. he then locked himself in the room with his girlfriend beginning the standoff and so they closed down the highway. police are now considering that girlfriend a hostage this morning. here's a picture of the unidentified suspect from the supermarket surveillance footage. police haven't given any information on their negotiations with this guy except to say they have been steady since this began
