kpix 5's anne makovec is there now.r was shot in the face. >> reporter: yeah. but shockingly, he is okay. in fact, he has already been released from the hospital. so it was more of a graze. this intersection behind me is now reopened, but it was shut down for about 10 hours overnight. this all started as a carjacking at around 6 p.m. this is a very busy time. it's a very busy intersection. so there were a lot of people around. a man that stole a bmw from a driver at gunpoint, antioch police spotted that stolen car a few minutes later. that's when they chased it here to this intersection in pittsburg, where the driver crashed the car and immediately got out and started firing a shotgun hitting one of the officers. here's a witness. >> i rolled up to the scene. i saw the accident. i heard the pops. just pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. he was just, you know, firing at the officers. and, you know, they just start firing back. >> reporter: and the man was not hit by the officers' gunfire. he did eventually surrender, unharmed.

anne makovec reports. >> reporter: we have been talking about a lot of these bills for years.ct, the governor has previously vetoed a couple of them. this morning they are up for a package vote in the senate aiming to tighter already strict gun laws. one bill would require background checks for ammo purchases. another mandating a person to get a state serial number before making a gun. a bill requires the report of a lost or stolen gun within five days and two measures aimed at large capacity magazines prohibiting the possession of any that hold more than 10 rounds. and cracking down on detachable magazines, the so-called bullet button. >> these guns we're talking about, guns like the ar-15 and other assault rifles like it, were designed specifically for modern warfare. they were designed to kill as many people as efficiently as possible in a short a time as possible. >> many of these measures are also included in a gun control initiative that is proposed by lieutenant governor gavin newsom for the ballot in november. and that's where politics could really come into play today
