good afternoon, i'm anne makovec, in for michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. that fire is burning along i-80 12 miles northeast of truckee. besides the westbound closure, the eastbound side is also closed at state route 267 for crews to get crew and equipment into the area. 650 acres have burned. cal fire is helping out with the water drops. chp says that the fire is now 10% contained. there's no estimate time of reopening the freeway. traffic is heavy in the area. chp crews are directing cars around the area as the fire reaches the road. they are trying to protect wildlife, like this deer, to stay safe. >>> we are also getting new information about the damage left behind by the wall fire burning near oroville. at least 41 homes have been destroyed since the fire started last friday. more than 4,000 people have been ordered to evacuate. but some have since been allowed to return home. that fire has burned nearly 6,000 acres. it is now 45% contained. >>> to washington now, where donald trump, jr., is releasing new details about his meeting with a russian lawyer

and kpix 5 anne makovec is live in san francisco, at the embarcadero station on why police officer staffing is a key part of the problem. ann? >> reporter: that will certainly be a big part of the discussion today. when the bart safety committee meets this morning, and they discuss some of the recent crime day that has been coming in. it doesn't look good for bart. and so they are continuing to face questions about how they handle crime on trains. as they face a shortage of officers. with the new expansion, to san jose, bart should have about 224 cops, to serve the 109 miles of line but today they only have 178 officers. >> our numbers relatively remain the same. our staffing amount, and our ridership has doubled and that is an ongoing issue now, that we are dealing with that. >> reporter: the lack of officers was one reason given for why bart started pairing back information given to the media about crimes being committed on the system. and another reason. in a memo, bart officials said that press releases on crime could unfairly affect and characterize riders of color. while bart has gott

. >> and i'm anne makovec in for kenny choi. the chp is on the hunt for the driver involved in one of those crashes. >> reporter: just after 4 a.m. flashing lights marked the spot of the first deadly crash. chp says i-80 west and el portal, a woman lost control of her car. >> she spun out with the lights outs. and a dodge charger collided with a vehicle. we think that she was exiting the vehicle at the same time. >> reporter: the driver of the accord died on scene. the coroner's office identified the woman as a 25-year-old. chp is reminding drivers say in your car with your seat belt on after a crash. >> she could have survived if she would have stayed in the vehicle. >> reporter: moments after the crash scene was cleared, traffic picked back up and a second didly crash involving a motorcycle and a semi. >> the semi made an unsafe lane change and the driver got ejected from the motorcycle. the truck driver pulled over for a few minutes before taking off. chp doesn't have a driver description but officers are looking for a yellow

kpix 5's anne makovec joins us now with the latest on the firefight. anne. >> reporter: this fire has now destroyed 50 homes and 49 other structures. it's 10% contained. the latest destruction near the gold rush town of mariposa. the fire started on sunday and blew up over the last few days. it's burned 109 square miles. that area littered with dead trees killed by bark beetles and years of drought making it prime fire fuel. this started about two miles east of lake mcclure. flames then jumped the merced river and several retardant lines and roads. it is still threatening about 1500 homes and other buildings. nearly 5,000 people have been evacuated. >> are we going to be victims or save our horses? we hauled the horses out and went home and got the people. we're seeing what's going on back home and we're just staying out of the way. let the red hats or whatever color hats they got, let them do the work. >> reporter: the highway 140 entrance to yosemite national park should be bumper-to-bumper in late july, but 140 is closed so getting into the park from

i'm kenny choi. >> i'm anne makovec in for michelle griego. it is 6:31. jessica flores is live in oakland where the east bay m.u.d. is talking about the proposed hike today. jessica. >> reporter: good morning. it's a controversy shall proposal and has complaints pouring in. east bay m.u.d. officials say they have to raise rates because of revenue being down. they didn't make enough money during the drought. and that's because customers did exactly what they were told to do. they conserved water. and now those same customers could be paying the price. the rate increase proposal 19% over the next two years for its 1.4 million customers. some customers feel like they are being penalized for saving water. east bay m.u.d. says the rate increases are critical to invest in infrastructure. everything from water treatment plants, aqueducts and 4200 miles of pipe. >> we do have to recoup some of the water bills that were lost during the historic drought. >>> east bay m.u.d. nearly doubled rates over the past 10 years raising rates annually 7.1%. now, this proposal

. >> i'm anne makovec. >>> right now crews are on the scene of a big fire in san jose. let's get to kpix 5's jackie ward who just arrived on scene. >> reporter: the fire is out. but san jose fire says their crews will be here for hours. take a look at what's still going on behind me. as you can see a lot of fire trucks and fire engines are still here. the fire started around 2:20 this morning and developed into a three-alarm fire. this two-story building on williams road is abandoned and boarded up. it used to be a dentist office. witnesses say they think they saw homeless people fleeing from the building and the captain of the san jose fire department says that the homeless population is a problem here in the city of san jose. san jose fire can confirm that fireworks did not cause this to happen. the fire started in the inside somehow. an exact cause hasn't been determined. so thankfully there are no injuries to report. and right now fire crews are just monitoring the scene hoping that no hot spots flare up. in san jose, jackie ward, kpix 5. >>> the 4th of july celebra

i'm anne makovec for michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. >>> right now in san jose, firefighters areing to stamp out the hot spots after a massive fire in the foothills. kpix 5's jessica flores is live at the scene with the details. jessica. >> reporter: kenny, that's right. those huge flames are out. but those hot spots remain and that's why fire crews are still here. but take a look around me at this devastation. this is one of the homes burned. two homes in total. you can see this one once a beautiful home with views of the city below now completely charred and destroyed. that garage you're looking at and a car behind that garage door destroyed. the fire ripped through 100 acres a forced evacuation in total burned two homes. the flames broke out around 4:30 p.m. yesterday here in the foothills of east san jose near lariat lane and claitor way. smoke covered silicon valley. they contained the flames and evacuated the residents. the fire burned one home and damaged another. 11 homes were evacuated. we spoke to a resident whose home is still standing and thanking fire crews. >> house
