. >>> i'm anne makovec. with the stroke of the pen, president trump changing how they live in the u.s. a new wildfire has exploded in size in just the past few hours. this is the hughes fire. nearly 20,000 people have been ordered to evacuate. that fire tore through at least 12 square miles so far and there is no contain. we have new video showing the power of the fire. let's take a live look where you can see the smoke there in that background. this is what we have been seeing. they have been able to attack the fire. luckily the winds are allowing that to happen, hoping to stop the spread. they broke out just before 11:00 this morning near lake castaic. it's right off i-5. the freeway is closed in both directions through the grapevine. there is some video from an elementary school where kids were immediately put on buses or their parents picked them up and evacuated. thousands of people in nearby areas right now doing the same thing. reporter amanda from cbs news los angeles is in the area, talking to peopl

. >> i'm anne makovec with a look at more of these stunning images that are coming out of southern californiaight. that's video of the palisades fire, the house burning. power lines near the house. and this is some video where you can see a wall of flames that are coming over the ridge, closer to the house until the embers and the smoke just take over the backyard. we have heard from a number of evacuees who say they could not leave what they were seeing. >> and once we heard the helicopters, i could see with my eyes that it was just growing. nothing like what we had seen before. >> in malibu, evacuation orders were expanded this morning. and creeping into the same area where this is the salon burning there. and this is in altadena from the deadly eaton fire with a huge plume of smoke there. flames are still burning in piles of are buildings and homes in that hazy orange sky. that is made by all the smoke throughout the area. we are keeping an eye out for pictures and video to give us more perspective on how devastating the fires have been because right now, it is still hard to believe. >> ye

i'm anne makovec. the visit comes as the president has been in a war of words with governor newsom over federal relief for the wildfires. the president and first lady melania trump are expected to land at lax this afternoon. then they're going to head to the palisades fire burn area and get an aerial and walking tour of some of the damage. the president has criticized state and local officials response to the fires, and has threatened to withhold federal relief funds. this morning, he laid out two actions that he wants california to take, saying the state has to adopt voter id laws and send more water to the los angeles area. well, the governor's office responded with a fact check on the state's voting laws and water policy and said that conditioning aid for american citizens is wrong. earlier today, the president stopped in north carolina, where he talked about overhauling the president, the federal disaster response. erika brown has the latest on that. >>>>president trump arrived in asheville, north

. >>> i'm anne makovec. southern california has never seen a fire storm like this. more than 100,000 people evacuated, and we just learned the number of people killed in these fires is rising. here is the latest. at least a thousand structures have been destroyed. five people have been killed. the wildfires continue to be fueled by santa ana winds that have at times, act as a punch of a hurricane. more than 100,000 people have been forced to evacuate. the biggest fire is in the pacific palisades, torching an area half the size of san francisco. but that's just one of several fires stretching all the way from the coast inland to pasadena, not far from the rose bowl stadium. that fire destroyed these churches and several businesses after exploding in size. reporter joy benedict is there. >> they have very limited water, so they sprayed the roof next door. they're hoping that will hold and that will be enough to prevent this fire from spreading even further to the last two homes that are still standing here on glen rose avenue, where we are. i mean, there is destructio

. >> i'm anne makovec. >>> we begin with breaking news. a new wildfire is now burning in los angeles county and people are again being told to evacuate. it's the last thing we need down there, video here of the so-called kenneth fire. it's burning now near bell canyon north of highway 101 in the woodland hills area. taking a live look right now at that fire, you can see all that smoke. this is burning to the south right now, pretty close to some homes there. we've already seen fire helicopters making drops on that fire hoping to get a handle on it. it's already burned about 50 acres. we'll stay on top of that new fire and in the meantime we're getting a clearer picture of the scope of devastation across los angeles county. entire neighborhoods leveled from the chopper here just row after row of homes burned to the ground. this is in the city of pacific palisades. a reporter touring the devastation from the air says it's unlike anything he's ever seen. >> reporter: this is like the first chance that we're actually kind of getting a look at

. >> i'm anne makovec. >>> we begin with breaking news out of the east bay this afternoon. the san francisco chronicle is reporting former oakland mayor sheng thao has been indicted by a federal grand jury following an fbi corruption investigation. the paper is citing an anonymous source for its report. it's not clear what thao might have been charged with, but the news comes months after she was recalled from august and last june the fbi raided the home thao shares with her boyfriend, andre jones. investigators also raided properties linked with the duong family. they were investigated for allegedly making illicit campaign donations to thao and other politicians. investigators have not revealed what possible crime they were looking into. when we interviewed thao last summer, she offered a blanket denial of any wrongdoing. >> i am not the subject of investigation. i have done nothing wrong. >> the u.s. attorney's office is planning to make a major announcement tomorrow morning. the charges against thao could be included in that announcement. we'll have the latest for you on

. >> i'm anne makovec. >>> firefighters are afraid that the powerful winds moving into southern california could erase the progress they've made over the past few days and potentially make things even worse. the conditions are such a concern the national weather service calls it a "particularly dangerous situation." here is the latest from los angeles right now. the number of people killed in those wildfires has risen to at least 24 and at least 23 people are missing. more than 12,000 structures, including buildings and cars, have been destroyed and about 92,000 people are still under evacuation orders. the good news, cal fire says they've seen very little fire growth over the past 36 hours. the palisades fire along the coast and the eaton fire further inland have burned about 59 square miles so far. that is an area about the size of san francisco and the city of alameda combined. the palisades fire is 14% contained. the eaton fire is 33% contained. fire crews still on high alert because of the dangerous fire conditions. they prepositioned in vulnerable areas like the topanga canyon just w

i'm anne makovec in for juliette. >>> it's been more than a week and a half since the end of the santa cruz wharf collapsed into the oceans. we're talking a huge amount of debris, construction equipment, and even an entire restroom building floating away. now in about 13 hours it's going to be back open for business. engineers have been working around the clock to assess the damage and make sure the rest of the wharf is safe. in the meantime businesses on the wharf and their employees have been in limbo without a way to pay the bills. our kara st. cyr caught up with a long time candy shop at the end of the wharf and they could not be more relieved to be back in business they tell her. >> reporter: it's been ten days since jenny and gina morini last opened their candy shop to the public. >> back here is where we dip all our chocolates and nut clusters. >> reporter: the store is close to the edge of the santa cruz wharf. the wharf's closure has cost the family tens of thousands of dollars. december is their busy month. >> we weren't hearing anything. we were hearing it could be weeks. we

anne makovec joining me now with all the details. >> i'm sure the kids were happy to be out of school, but the reason really is unfortunate and they could be out of school nearly a week as the school repairs the electrical system. the district sent a message to parents saying the theft was discovered saturday morning. staff hosting a basketball competition arrived at the school to find the power cut. there were signs somebody stripped the wires of their copper, which can be valuable even sold as scrap. so classes were canceled indefinitely for the nearly 600 k through eighth grade students. >> it's disheartening this happened. the heaviness, we are all feeling it. this shouldn't have happened. the youngest members of our community are the ones affected. >> repair work has already begun. the district thinks classes can resume at the school in a week and they say if the power is still out at that point, they'll find somewhere else to use as a temporary school until it's fixed. they'll keep parents and students updated through emails and on social media. >> there's still homework. thank

our anne makovec joins us with the latest developments. right now thousands in l.a. county under the threat of that new fire. >> this is certainly the last thing they needed. only good thing, they had a lot of resource it is in place from the firefighters. but they're dealing with some major winds right now. this fire breaking out at about 11:00 this morning and then just this afternoon, they will exploded to more than 8,000 acres. it's called the hughes fire, and it's burning north of the eaton and palisades fire, where it is near castaic lake. it has forced that shutdown of i-5 in both directions through the grapevine. here is a live look at the fire right now where it is a wider shot that you can see the smoke that's put up. the plume stretching for miles. right now they're dealing with a red flag warning that will last until tomorrow night. that's a long time. they're expected to intensify tonight, reaching gusts up to 60 miles an hour, and we've seen how quickly that can carry a fire. this is video that shows why it is such a big concern, intense flames on both

. >> i'm anne makovec. >>> it is really tough to even try to wrap your head around the sheer scope of the devastation in los angeles right now. thousands upon thousands of homes that have burned to the ground, firefighters just starting to make some progress against these deadly wildfires, trying to take advantage of the break in the winds today, but dangerous fire conditions are expected yet again next week. so the window of time is very short. there are at least five active wildfires burning right now across the los angeles area. the biggest concern for fire crews, the pal stays fire and the eaton fire. here's what we know so far. there have been 11 confirmed deaths, but that number is expected to rise as emergency workers go through more of the rubble. more than 12,000 homes destroyed and more than 30,000 acres have burned. there are 7,500 state personnel battling the fires. the palisades fire has exploded to more than 20,000 acres. right now it is 8% contained. this video shows it is growing to the unincorporated community of topanga in western los angeles county. here's a closer

impacted by wildfires to sue oil companies for their role in creating climate-related disasters, anne makovec has a closer look at the proposal. >> it would include any disaster related to climate change, including flooding, which, of course, we've seen plenty of around here as well. this bill would allow people who have been victims of climate disasters to seek damages from fossil fuel companies in court. it would also allow insurance companies to sue them with the hope that the companies would do that instead of increasing everyone's premium. that includes the state's fair plan, which is in danger of running out of money. state senator wiener offered the bill saying oil companies knew their product would lead to climate disasters and that they suppressed the science. >> the fossil fuel industry has endless resources. profits continue to just spiral and spiral into the stratosphere and we are left holding the bag. >> so the bill is facing an uphill battles. the chair of the california republican party saying democrats would find a way to blame oil companies for the sky being blue if they tho

i'm anne makovec. right now is a pivotal point in the fight against the southern california wildfires. here is the good news. there have not been any new fires, but they are still in the thick of it this afternoon. biggest fires burning right now, still the palisades fire along the coast, and the eaton fire further inland. together, they burned an area about the size of san francisco and concord combined. the eaton fire destroyed or damaged more than 7,000 buildings, and killed at least 15 people. this afternoon, it's 35% contained. because of the winds, power has been shut off to certain areas, trying to prevent new fires. but those winds have not grounded fire fighting aircrafts, which is good news, at least for now. firefighters say they have been able to keep the palisades fire from growing today, which killed at least nine people. it is 17% contained. thousands of people remain under evacuation orders, including the city of brentwood. national guard blocking. firefighters saw gusts in the area as

. >>> i'm anne makovec with some of the bay area help on the way to southern california right now. several engines hit the highway this afternoon with equipment preparing for the worst. our katie nielsen was heading down i-5 today to cover the fires since they passed this strike team coming from marin county. a part of the cavalry of firefighters from northern california, including teams from alameda county and santa rosa. here, we are seeing firefighters from skywalk average, tiburon, and central and southern marin. and a team of 22 firefighters, they are heading to socal from santa clara county, bringing five engines with them. they're going to be assigned to fight the eaton fire near pasadena. and they say all of them have volunteered for the duty, where they could be gone for up to two weeks. >> the two that we have is the training, the special equipment. we have camping gear. we have everything that we need to be self-sufficient for 72 hours. and also to camp out in the dirt if we need to, depending on where the fire front is. >> and the battalion chief wanted locals here to k

anne makovec has more on tonight's memorial and what's happened since that deadly day. >> tonight there is a candlelight vigil in half moon bay to honor and remember the seven people who were killed just doing their job, 10ing to mushrooms at a coastal farm. the suspected shooter who used to work at the farm shot and killed seven of his co-workers and injured an eighth. the murders happened at two separate mushroom farms in had half moon bay. authorities later arrested a man in the parking lot of a san mateo county sheriff's office substation. that man, 67-year-old farmworker cheung lee zhao, prosecutors say he's a disgruntled employee. he's been in jail awaiting trial since his arrest. today was a day of remembrance in half moon bay in the park where the city is unveiling design proposals for a permanent memorial, a tribute to remember the victims of the shooting and honor contributions of farmworkers all along california's coast. the city unveiled some proposals and took community feedback on the designs. >> some they really like the color. some really like the landscape portion of it
