your mother, ann richards, was the governor of texas. richards: correct. vu: the fireand that she was. richards: yes. vu: your father, david, is a civilights attorney, and you write in your book vthat your dinner table was never really about eatingg it was for sor precinct, so what's your earliest memory of being politically active?ch ds: well, i mean, that was the... i had an incredible childhood. i mean, my parents were into every movement that came through town -- the farmworkers, the women's movement. i think the most important mont for us, though, was when my mom got to run the first campaign ever of a woman who was running for the state hous sarah weddington who had argued the roe. vs. wade case, ot and as kids we allo be involved, and i saw firsthand both how hard it wasr men to run for office and how important it was and how exciting it was r men because she won the, and then, of course, mom went on to have her own political career. vu: and one of the most notable moments of your career, i mean, we all watched it nationally in 2015, was when congre

're joined by her daughter cecille richards, who traveled that road with her through success and through losing as well. and what she taught you and what you went on to do, how did you come to be head of planned parenthood? you almost did not apply for the job. >> like a lot of other women, when i was called to interview for the job, i had all of my own self debts. i've never done anything that bit. i'll must cancel the interview. then i did what any grown woman would do, i called my mom and she said, are you kidding me? this is the most important organization for women and women's health in the country. and thank goodness she told me to go to the interview. that she was a big believer in women and that we always discounted ourselves, always winning for the perfect moment, always waiting to be asked. and her message was always "don't wait for someone else to ask you, don't waver instructions, and for goodness x, start before you are ready." ifa can that's a car -- i have taken that to

gillibrand: the only reason i can do it -- cecile: the only reason i can do it is because ann richards was my mother. happy mother's day. >> it is madeleine albright's 81st birthday, speaking of women who know how to support other women. cecile: that is an interesting thing happening now. women are in solidarity with other women in a way i feel like i have seen a little bit, but we are getting critical mass in different places. when people speak up and tell their stories, there are women going, yeah, i am with you. i love the original -- one of the originators of the #metoo movement said, it is not that women have not been speaking up for centuries. it is that we finally have found a frequency and we are not giving it up. it is a great way of thinking about it. right now, and fundamental to understand and a lot of people besides women understand, if you can't control your body, you are not free. nobody is free until everybody is free. this is something even our own research is showing. since the election, since the #metoo movement, women are so much more aware of -- because people are
