anne thompson in newtown, connecticut tonight. ann, thanks. >>> what happened there at sandy hook elementary school in newtown is sadly so similar to what happened in a small town a long way away from here in scotland almost 17 years ago. the people there more than most know what newtown is going through and what may lie ahead for them. tonight nbc's kier simmons reports from the town of dunblane. >> reporter: in dunblane tonight they are lighting candles for the children of newtown and fortheir own. 16 children, ages 5 and 6, and their elementary school teacher, killed in 1996 by a heavily armed gunman who then killed himsel himself. >> the security and innocence of a scott turn village was shattered in the most horrifying fashion. >> reporter: the local priest found himself burying children he had baptized. >> then there was this awful void. what happens now? >> reporter: dunblane, like newtown, is a tight-knit community. everybody knows each other here. even after almost 17 years, many a are reticent to talk about what happened

nbc's anne thompson has more. >> reporter: the reopening of newtown schools, an act of faith and resolve. >> whether you wait a day or a month, whatever, there's no -- there's no rule book. >> reporter: determination quickly tested as a threat to one elementary school forced it into lockdown before students even arrived. the site of the massacre, sandy hook elementary, remained closed. moving vans carrying furniture and equipment left under a police escort headed for the school's new building in neighboring monroe. at newtown's catholic church, two funerals, james mattioli. his favorite classes were math and recess. 6-year-old jessica rekos loved being a big sister to her brothers travis and shane. >> i stood by the post lantern. >> reporter: four girls and two boys crying and out of breath having come from the school 100 yards away. what did you say to them? >> it's okay. it's okay. come with me. >> reporter: inside the retired psychologist gave them toys and the children started talking. >> the two boys just start crying and saying we can't go back to school. we can't go back to school

weekend in this country, we go back to the town that remains the saddest spot in our country, nbc's anne thompson is in newtown for us tonight. anne, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. i'm actually in the center of the borough of sandy hook. near the christmas tree where a big memorial has sprung up in the wake of these shootings. every day brings new details about what happened inside that school. and today we learn that not one, but two people were injured in the attack. welcome news about survivors on a day when the funerals began. old enough to know, too young to understand. the heartbreaking sight of children mourning other children began in newtown today. 6-year-old jack pinto, a loving, vivacious boy, an athletic child, he idolized victor cruz. cruz wrote jack's name on his shoes sunday. now it was the team's turn to pay tribute. >> they were comforted and protected and a message of you're being secure now. >> reporter: noah pozner's mother called her 6-year-old son her "little man." his uncle remembered noah as "smart as a whip." noah's twin sister arielle survived in another

nbc's anne thompson is here. she suspect the day speaking with residents of newtown. anne, thank you for coming over. >> reporter: hi, chris. >> i have been describing the mood here as a heaviness. there is a feeling here that is so profoundly deeply sad. it's almost hard to put into words. >> reporter: you know, i was talking with one resident tonight and she said, we're just numb. we don't know what to feel. and i was -- i talked to another woman today who said she said merry christmas for the first time since this happened today and she said her first reaction was guilt. how can i say merry christmas when 20 children between the ages of 6 and 7 were gunned down? and i think that's what they are struggling with here. and they're also struggling with the idea that this is -- people moved here because it's an idyllic community, if you will. >> it's beautiful. >> reporter: it is gorgeous. absolutely beautiful. they moved here because of the quality of life. there's lots of space. the schools are very, very good. they wanted to be out of the hustle and bustle of the city

ann thompson and nbc's national investigative correspondent michael isokoff have been in newtown since now from connecticut. ann, first to you. talk about the families and how they've been coping and your interactions with the survivors. >> andrea, i think today i've seen one of the saddest things i've ever seen in my career, and that is at the funeral home here in newtown 7, 8, 9-year-old boys wearing newtown football t-shirts walking in to a funeral home, and when you think that they are going not for because their grandfather or their grandmother or great aunt passed away, this they are going because a classmate or a brother's classmate passed away, and that this is the first funeral that you will go to in what will be a week of funerals. it is a heart-wrenching scene. >> ann, we think about the twin, ann, the sur vooifg twin and the grief of that family and of that child. >> right. >> the posners. >> the posner people. >> absolutely. i mean, noah was 6 years old. big new york giants fan. i don't know if you saw the game yesterday. noah was a smart little boy -- that was jack pinto.
