foster care system in the united states to do that we're joined this morning by rob dean of the annie e. casey foundation. rob, first give us a snapshot of foster care in the united states. how many u.s. children are in it. and how do they enter the foster care system? >> let's start with the beginning of the system. about 6.4 million children a year are referred to protective services because there's a concern about a child being either abused or neglected. about half that number about 3.2 million are subject to an investigation which means a public agency goes out to determine whether abuse and neglect has occurred. from that about 700,000 kids a year determined to be victims of abuse and neglect. of that 1.2 million children receive some type of follow-up service so some of the victims receiv receive services. one could be placement into foster care. at about 250,000 kids each year are placed into foster care. at any one time there's about 400,000 kids in foster care. >> on average how long do kids stay in foster care? >> there's a wide range. the average is a little bit more than 12 months
